I did it for a year, and i'm ending it next week. I'm going to put a texturizer in my hair next week.

We support you in any decision you make about your hair, but may I ask why the sudden switch? I ask because Texturized hair does has it's own drawbacks too.

The Pros
loosening of curls=reduced shrinkage
won't damage your hair as much as relaxers
you have the option of going straight or curly
wash and go style is real convenient
You can do permanent color to your hair because it is not completely relaxed, a permanent color won't be as drying (if done properly) as it would be on bone straight relaxed hair.

The Cons
You'll still have to deal with tangles
You must find a stylist who really knows how to do it or if you do it yourself -you can be dealing with either over or underprocessed hair
You MUST give yourself deep treatments, conditioning treatments and possibly hardcore treatments (Aphogee or Nexxus Emergencee) to combat possible breakage.
Finding the right products can be a hassle
Dealing with humidity, because your hair isn't 100% straight you'll have to deal with the puff monster every once in awhile.

I'm not trying to deter you, just want you to be prepared for what you may encounter. I'm a texturized head and I love it, but I feel that if I knew what I know now about hair care, I would be all natural...take a look at my album and you'll see the versatility that I have with texturized hair. www.fotki.com/nubian7 password is hair. Hope this gives you insight.:)

I want to be able to wear my hair straight and curly. living in hot as South GA I can keep my hair straight for a whole day, but I don't want to over do it with the heat. I also want to wear it out, but having different textures makes it hard.

I know some people say try different styles, but I don't like twist, bantu nots, and a bunch of other natural styles.

Do I have to texturize my whole head, b/c I just want my hair middle and front like the back ?

good luck darling! I would suggest that you have a consultation with a professional stylist if you plan on only doing certain sections, you can ask their opinions and then do it yourself if you want. Most likely they are going to tell you that you have to texturize your whole head just to make sure that you have a even uniform texture all over. You should check out this site for more info about texturizers www.jazma.com.

Babe I think you have one of the prettiest heads of curls I ever seen! But do what you feel is best for you, be sure to post pics and good luck I hope your hair comes out fab (I'm sure it will anyway :p )

Yep!! That what she said!!! Your hair is very pretty but you have to do what makes you happy with it! We support you either way. I know it'll look great!

I agree. You have beautiful hair now. However, the key word is YOU, so it's your decision. I hope you will be happy with it. I'm sure your hair will be pretty regardless. Good luck Divine. :)

she stole all my words!!!

good luck, girlie!

Divine,
It is totally up to you. I would also remember that at least you did try and if it doesn't work out, you can always go back to what you know.
Good luck....Post Pictures with whatever you choose!

Good luck Divine. You've been natural for a whole year? You should be proud of yourself. I always said to myself that I could at least give it a year, you know? I figure after a year you really know if you do or don't like something. If you have any doubts though, give yourself an extra week or two to think it through, no need to be in a hurry. I personally love your hair too. Good luck.

I love my natural hair, but I want a little less shrinkage. I just hope it comes out right, but i'm going to research a little more.

Texturizer---been there, done that.

CONS
---touch ups
--having to wait at the salon/all day thing

---hair dressers who want to make your hair straight, so it's easier for THEM to style

--hair dresser complaining that your hair is STILL too thick

--I still had humidity issues. My hair never stayed straight when it was humid. It was the same as if I were natural

---breakage/knots/tangles---all three at once---detangling nightmare

---new growth---a constant thing to deal with. One texture is sooooooooo much better and easier to comb. I can detangle my hair in no time now (without tears).

--even the same stylist couldn't process my hair the same way twice, so I ended up with different textures, and that's not fun. My hair went from curls to loose waves in 10 minutes. My hair is easily straightened.

---having my black hair turn reddish

---And the worst thing ever? Growing your hair long and having to cut it off, so you can grow it back natural again because you realized with all the drama of being texturized, you might as well be natural.

Pros
---a little less shrinkage/easier to see the length
---you can say you did it

My thoughts exactly. Good luck. :)

Brownie, I couldn't have said it any better, the knots and tangles are terrible. And you know what, my hair is at brastrap and I want to cut it all off b/c it's so very annoying, IMHO it's harder to deal with with a texturizer. I'm now transitioning back to natural. The first texturizer is so very deceptive, it's so nice and soft little shrinkage and as you apply the relaxer the different textures come to surface, can you say nightmare, lol. But you know what people told me this but I did what I wanted to do and nothing or noone was going to deter me, you live and you learn, we have to make our own mistakes and I did just that. However, it works for some people just not for ME. Divine, I hope everything works out for you.

I woke up this morning thinking about you and realized you and I have a similiar situation. Dealing with two different textures. Your back area is easier to handle and sounds like the rest of your hair is more tightly coiled or 4bish. My crown area is a softer, looser texture than the rest of my hair probably a tight 3b or loose 3c, my sides (by my ears) are 4bish and the back is a tight 4a. Wash and go's are a no no because by the time it finishes shrinking my hair just looks off, something you don't notice or have to deal with when it's relaxed.

The thing is that I love box braids (no extensions) and I love scarves, both of which help camaflouge (sp?) the difference between the two textures. And my braid-outs and twist-outs instantly help the two textures blend well. I'm not sure what I would do if I didn't like braids. I have no desire to use heat on my hair except for the occasional blow out. If you really don't like most "natural" styles I think you will probably be happier with trying the texturized route, otherwise I don't think you will be able to make peace with your hair.

Oh one last thing to consider is that a lot of long-haired naturals say that as their hair gets longer the difference in textures gets less noticeable. Maybe in 6 months to a year it would get to a better length to handle the difference. I don't know, it's a thought.

Oh bother, I know this is hard no matter what so I'll stop talking and just wish you the best. :Rose:

Divine, I looked at your album, and you have a beautiful hair texture. :) But, you have to do what's convenient for you! I live in SC, so I know about that humidity. Me personally, I like big, bushy Diana Ross/Tracy Ellis Ross hair, so I can't wait to be natural for that very reason...so I can wear my hair wild and free!

I hope I don't go through those problems. I never had a problems with knots when my hair was relaxed or the state it is in now.

The very reason I love my natural hair today!

Divine, I read a few posts back that you mentioned that you had some more research to do. Get as much information as you can and truly weigh out the pros and cons for your options, then do you.

If you haven't noticed it by now, let me be the first to tell you that you'l have nothing less than support and love here within the board. Support and love.

Take care! :D

Divine, your hair is awesome but I totally understand wanting to texturize. I went that route twice- one experience was horrid (my hair fell out in clumps!)and the other was mediocre (my hair was easier to handle but the texture differences were still there and I couldn't wash and go). So from those experiences, I'd say that you need to do a number of strand tests prior to letting a stylist texturize. I can't emphasize that enough. Also, keep your expectations realistic- I think that was my problem. Best of luck!

No advice but I would like to offer just commentary. I don't know much about Texturizing but this thread was very informative. Thanks for providing cons and pros with this process. It is great having so many supportive women during the transitioning/natural process. :)

It seems that people make the decision to texturize when they have had their hair natural for a while. Is it because being natural gets a little harder to manage when your hair grow longer?

I'm probably going to wait another 6months and see if I can get these layers even out. If I can do that, then I can deal with my hair. I told my boyfriend about it, and he had a hizzy (as did my parents). I'm just going to wait it out a few more months.

I will still research though.........
