For those with natural hair or transitioning, do you use a serum on your hair. Im wondering if i can use keracare silken seal on my new growth to make it softer??

I don't know if a serum will make natural hair softer, but it definitely adds the same shine as a heavier grease/pomade would but without being so heavy. I usually use serums when my hair is pressed and when I'm doing my twist outs. Right now I use Fantasia Hair Polisher, which l like

, but I think I'm going to try Keracare Silken Seal next.

Serums don't really soften hair. They seal in moisture and smooth the cuticle so your hair looks shiny, frizz-free and doesn't tangle; and because it's smooth, you are more able to appreciate the softness when you touch it...but really that softness comes from moisturizing you give your hair beforehand.

Serums work for some people and not others. I think they are somewhat water-proof so that if you apply them to wet hair, they form a coating that seals the water in. So the moisture from the water provides the softness while the serum makes sure the water doesn't evaporate. In that sense, they are wonderful for keeping hair soft. The only thing with them is once you have them on, I don't think you can moisturize your hair really well without first washing them off. Think build-up. And I think it's this property that makes them unpopular with some people. I would also guess that applying them to dry (unmoisturized) hair would bring disappointment because they'd give your hair a nice cosmetic touch alright, but because your hair is not moisturized, it'd feel hard and be brittle no matter how good it looked. Also, if you use too much, especially on dry hair, your hair can feel icky and sticky.

I am natural and I do use a serum every now and then... especially if I know I'll be washing my hair later. I make sure my hair is wet and then I rub some in my palms and smooth them over my hair. (I wear micros, BTW). The result is a shiny frizz-free look; and the moisture (from the water) and smoothness (due to serum) translate to hair that looks and feels baby-soft. I never use a serum on dry hair coz even though it'd flatten the cuticle and make the hair shiny, I wouldn't be doing my hair any good if I just gave it the "look" without the "care" ie if I didn't make sure it was well moisturized first. I use water but you can use any moisturizer before the serum.

i'm transitioning and i use serum ALL THE TIME:) i love it. i use the LUST serum on a regular basis. the main reasons why i use it is because it detangles like nothing else when your hair is still damp, it keeps my hair frizz free and it adds shine.

I find serums don't work too well on my hair. The silicones in serums dry my hair out. I stick with oils. However, when I do a flat iron or a blow dry I will use Loreal's smooth intense serum but only a little as it can weigh my hair down. But as Nonie said, it works for some and not for others. I know ladies who use it with great results.

NAY -- Can you give more details on exactly how you use the serum? I've got some serum I bought ages ago that I'd like to give a try! Thanks!!

Serums are good for smoothing cuticles and adding shine, but you have to be careful with them because they act as moisture repellents.
