Ladies I am having a problem. I can't figure out what is up with my hair. It seems like everything I use just dries it out. The only thing that works for me is Soft n' Free activator/moisturizer. But, that seems to dry out my hair at the end of the day too. I have tried butters, nothing, oils, hot oil treatments, protein treatments, moistuzing treatments and everything else under the sun. The only thing I want is soft hair. It doesn't have to look moist long as if feels that way I could careless. I am really tired of wasting money. I need some help. Please help me.

Fear not I too have suffered from dry hair... What worked for me? Honey and oilve oil deep conditioning treatment. Pour about 4 parts oil 3 parts honey into a container (maybe not so much oil but it depends on you, and you can use coconut oil instead). Anyhow place the mix into the microwave then place mix on hair and let sit for about 30 mins. Rinse, wash or CO wash the hair and voila. You can also try shea butter mixed with lakairs conditioner as a deep conditioner. You can also add an oil like olive or coconut oil to your conditioner. Also make sure your drinking enough water that is the first thing I check when I have dry hair. HTH

Before you trim try to see if you can solve your problem with conditioning and deep treating those ends. If you decide to trim (which might make your hair feel better instantly-but what about when it happens again and again and again, will you always trim? It might not be neccessary) Anyway if you do decide to trim, trim the parts that feel rough.

-Besides how long have you been natural? And how long have you had a perm? If there is a big difference some new naturals blame the dryness on "scab hair". But I don't know if thats overrated or not-What does make since is that you can't spend a huge amount of your life placing chemicals on your hair and then expect your natural hair to just snap back...You know what I mean, it might not happen that way. It might be going though its little stage try the ideas mentioned above and give your hair some time to do its thing. :0)

Don't underestimate the power of the honey & oil deep conditioner. It worked wonders for me. I was having a major problem with dry crunchy feeling hair. I've also found that wearing my hair in a head wrap or under a wig for a couple of days with a little coconut oil and not touching it helps too.

I'll try deep conditioning before I trim. My hair doesn't look like it needs a trim and I never see any split ends. Anymore conditioning recommendations? I'll try the oil and honey first. I just did that after washing the other day but it turned out oily. I think I will try it before and then wash it out with my soap/shampoo. Does that sound okay?

Sure Brittanynic16 that sounds like a good idea-I would use the honey and oilve oil before then wash it out. Maybe your using too much oil, maybe your hair does not respond well to oilve oil, coconut oil is also an option. Use what you have and allow your conditioners to work, try and try again like I said add oil if you want. Get creative and stay determined-I've gone though this several times and I know that it can be a pain-but just hold on, your hair will come out fine. Give it time and remember to drink your water. If you need anything else PM me. I've been natural for almost a year-so feel free to ask me anything.

I don't think so. It has been like this for awhile. I lived in 2 different dorms and have gone home over the summer and I have had the same problem. But, you never know. If I do what should I do about it?

Is there something your using that's making your hair dry out? Also you should be follwing up your shampoo with the conditioner, if you wash it out you'll be washing away all the oils and it may leave your hair stripped. Here's what has worked for me:
washing with some type of natural shampoo (aubrey's or jason brand)
deep conditioning with Aubrey's GPB
when I get out of the shower I spary my hair with Surge rev 14 and then follow up with a combo of shea butter and coconut oil( already mixed together)

My hair ends up feeling soft and smooth but not greasy. I have tried alot of things too and this was one of the times my hair felt the softest. Another thing I can recommend is profective breakfree, it does keep the hair moisturised but is a little heavier. I use it if my hair is feeling drier than usual.

HTH and good luck

Scurl activator/moisturizer and world of curls moisturizing gel always works for me to keep my hair 'wet'. But I use them when my hair is pulled back in a ponytail/bun. I'm not sure how they are when wearing the hair out...
by the way, with the gel, you have to get used to the texture of it...it's really wet feeling.

I agree with the olive oil and honey- my hair also loves coconut milk and honey. Using unrefined shea butter and virgin coconut oil has given my hair a level of moisture I didn't know was possible for my hair- I really love the combination.

I thought that was the one you where talking about. I have tried that too and it does nothing for me. Thank you though.

Man I wish I could help, cuz I know how you feel.

I have hard water at my school and man my hair felt like a brillo pad.

I deep conditioned over night with Lustrasilk Aloe Vera Cholesterol (I used a lot of it)

Then I rinsed my hair in the morning and did my usual (Mango Butter on soaking wet hair in a scrunching motion and then followed by Spraying Pantene Leave in). It makes my hair soft every time. Since Im here at school, I just found out that I have to moisturize my hair 2-3 times a day instead of once a day when I was at home becasue of this nasty water.

Yep avocado and other butters I've tried in the past (including refined shea butter) had no effect. The unrefined/raw shea butter is my hair's best friend now though its even outdone my old stand by carols daughter healthy hair butter.

Ok, this may sound weird, but this works for me.

Don't use any oil or butters. Period. You can use some shampoos/conditioners/styling products that include a little oil, but don't use it alone.

This article changed my life. I say try a clarifying shampoo to get rid of any buildup you have and then follow the tips in the article.

Good luck!

I was advised by many to use shea butter but I didn't want to so I concentrated on the sulfur 8 braid spray. I recently did a bc and have about 1.5inch twa. I was like 2ice a wk, and spray daily with the sulfur 8, cover the hair with a shower cap while bathing and when I'm done, I put on my wig to work. The wig leaves my hair when I return and my hair is so soft that I'm considering keeping the sulfur 8 as a staple.
Anyway, I'm going to continue monitoring it and will only know if my natural hair will continue to need it when I consistently get the same result with 2 or 3 bottles.

Your natural hair will not look or feel like your relaxed hair. I'm not sure what you mean by dry feeling. Try using distilled water.

Going out on a limb here.....have you tried Carols Daughter healthy hair butter? That stuff is good. And if you have more time, Hairlove has a cake batter recipe that mimicks the Carol's daughter. I'm transitioning and these are the only things so far that have worked on both the relaxed hair AND the natural hair.

In addition everyone else has good suggestion like deep conditioning, clarifying and using distilled water. Usually doing one of these three will correct any dryness I may have when I haven't been doing what I'm supposed to be doing.

Britt is must be the moon or something cause my hair is so dry right now and I'm not sure what I did.

Actually I do, I started shampooing once a week cause I had the itchies.
Way too many out-styles
Then I needed a trim so I blew dry it.

And that was all she wrote.

I'm trying to restore moisture by staying off the shampoo for about 2 months. I got the trim so it feels a little better. I'm using kemi-oyl shea butter pomade. I've never had a bad experience with this. I'm going to get a protein treatment with sebastian penetrait in a few weeks. And I'm going to try the honey and olive oil treatment.

So I'd say try the moisture route before trimming and if that fails try a protein. Or wear a style that doesn't require you to do anything to your hair for like a month or two.

I agree with bunny77, try to clarify your hair and I would try a creamy leave-in like Suave Professionals Awapuhi or I combine (sometimes) a liquid leave0in like 911 and then put Suave on top.

HTH
