I am sooooooo happy with how this straw set turned out! I’m about 4 mo post relaxer, so I was shooting for a natural looking style for my transition. For a min I was using too much heat to get it strait, and buns mat my hair in the middle, so this is a BIG breath of fresh air (keep in mind that I’m not as gifted as some of you LHCF’ers when it comes to styling my hair)

The first pic is my hair when flat ironed, second shows how much NG I have (this was taken a month ago so I have more NG now) The last two pics are the finished straw set (I didn't cut my hair at all)

Doesn’t it look like I'm NATURAL? I cut the straws about 2 inches long, and wrap it very tight to get this result. This will definitely be a staple hairstyle for me in my transition.:):):):)

I love it!! I did my first straw set about 2-3 months ago. It was easier than I thought it would be and lasted a good week and a half. I just want to warn you that when you get ready to wash be very careful--the tangles are a mother after a straw set. It won't stop me from doing another one soon though. How long did it take you to set it on the straws? I seemed like it took me two hours.

:ohwell: I was a little worried about the tangles.....but a good conditioner before combing and washing should take care of that. Did you condition before/while tackling the tangles?

It took me about 2 hours as well, but the drying time was like 20 mins(and the drying is the part I hate, dont ask why :))
 
I didn't think to condition before washing, so i just used CON poo and a lot of Silicon Mix and plenty of time and patience when detangling. Next time I will do an oil rinse or something "extra" before washing.
 
What kind of straws did you use?
How many approximately?
How did you secure them?

I just may have to try this for Christmas. You have inspired me :yep:

I used some regular drinking straws (the skinny white ones with the random color stripe though it) cut about 2-3 inch long. They're really cheap, so I got a bag of 280, but I only used 80-120 of them (not including the ones I cut too short)

I was supposed to secure them with bobby pins but I forgot to buy some, so I used clips (the kind you use for a roller-set) The clips left dents in the hair after everything was dry, but after taking the straws and clips out, I separted each twist and the dents were gone. Next time I'll try bobby pins with rubber tips, I'm they're better for your hair.

Bre, I encourage you to give it a shot. It was A LOT more easy than I though it would be (and that's coming from someone who has yet to do a successful roller-set after 4 tries!)
 
Your hair is beautiful! I'm definitely going to have to try this as I know I'm going to fall in love with it as well.

Thanks! First I washed and deep conditioned. Then on wet hair I put a little bit of Silicon Mix leave-in, Fantasia Frizz Buster, and EVOO (I was freestyling, so I'm sure you can use whatever products that you would use for a tight roller-set) As I put in the straws and clips I sprayed the peice of hair with a mixture of LottaBody and water (3pts water to 1 pt LottaBody). It helps to have a second bottle of water if your hair gets too dry, because it takes a while.

And just a note, make sure you don't get the LottaBody mixture on the other hair. I did this on accident (didn't know it would hurt), and it made the other hair hard before wrapped it around the straw. Even after re
wetting, it was hard to comb through so I probably pulled out some extra hair:ohwell: What helped after a while was to spray my hand with LottaBody, and rub directly on the peice of hair I was about to roll.

:lachen::lachen: It's not as bad as it seems. After you get the hang of it, it takes about 10 seconds per straw. I didn't even part the hair like you would a roller-set, I just grabbed a small peice and rolled it up. It was pretty easy. The first half of my head took 1.5 hrs and the last half was about 30 mins to complete. How long does it take you to do a rollerset?

Whats a rollerset?? :lachen::lachen: It does sound pretty simple though ....hmmmm...I'm still thinking about it. It does look so pretty. Darn me and my laziness!
 
Wow, your hair came out just lovely! :drunk: You make me want to try a straw set on my hair! I think I'm too lazy for that, though....lol

Don't be scurred!!!! It would look great on you. With all that hair it would turn out really BIG, curly and pretty;)
 
I have a question for anyone with an answer....

I used LottaBody to set the hair, but it didn't come out soft enough for my taste. I'm going to re-twist soon, but I want to use something less hard than LottaBody. Something that feels softer when done, but still packs a good hold.

Any suggestions?

What about Fantasia IC gel? I heard that's soft but provides a hold and doesn't get crunchy. What does everybody think about that product? Or maybe diluting the Lottabody a lil more....?
