I've been getting a lot of questions about how I twist and detangle my hair, so I decided to post this:

My dry large twist. About 25.

I wet my hair w/ cool water until it's completely saturated.

Once hair is completely saturated, apply about 1-2 TBSP of favorite condish (mine is Herbal Essence Hello Hydration-blue bottle) throughout hair. Must be a condish that provides great slip. This condish will be used as a leave-in.

I then untwist my hair 1 twist at a time and in a slow downward motion (about 5-6 times), I loosen up my strands and remove shedded hairs. Once done, I apply Qhemet Alma Oil Nourishing Pomade to my strands and retwist. I also use my favorite homemade shea butter mix for this process. Just need to use something that provides your hair w/ additional moisture and can be used also as a sealant. I then proceed to the next twist until all of my hair has been detangled and retwisted.

I lose very little hair detangling this way. I also make sure to work through any tangles/mattes with my finger so tangling isn't an issue. My hair stays nice and moisturized for days. If I desire to make smaller twist, I just untwist my large twist 1 at a time and make them smaller. And if I want to rock a cute TnC, I just apply rollers to the ends after I detangle/retwist, and untwist in the morning.

I love the versatility of my hair. Here is what my hair looks like after detangled and retwisted. Process takes me about 20-30min. I can do this every 2-3 days or once a week.

I wear my hair is some type of twist 90% of the time. My twist range from CHUNKY to small. However, I tend to prefer the medium to large size twist. I hate spending a lot of time on my hair and my hair tends to tangle easily when worn loose for a period of time. I also found that brushing and combing was a bit too harsh on my strands. So I have eliminated them from my routine.

HTHs someone :)

Thanks for posting! This is the way I do my twist, but I am the world's slowest twister it takes me forever.

That sink picture looks like what I get after detangling 2 twists. :perplexed I realized that the finger detangling doesn't work because the strands I pull down always get caught on the knots at the end of my hair, knots that no matter how many times I cut them out, they always come back.

Great job on managing your hair and great picture tutorials. I'm totally impressed you do it all with 2 tbs on conditioner!

Thanks Oooop2,

Great tutorial. Like Mdwezi, my hair loss in the sink looks like that after two twists also.

Maybe that's why I don't see any major growth.

Okay, I'm going to try again. There just must be some way I can do it. I'll just wet and redo 4 twists each day. That doesn't take more than 10 minutes. Then over a week's time, I will have done them all while only spending 10 minutes a day. Maybe that can do it? I'm going to try, your hair is fab and looks great and you retain well, I really want to be able to adapt your method for my hair.

Thanks for sharing! Your hair looks very healthy.

I actually just did something similar to this myself a few days ago. Two days after twisting/detangling, I took the twists out and my hair was still mainly tangle free. It was great.

Yeah..Since my hair is completely saturated, I realized that I didn't need as much condish. So I just 1 tbsp and focus on my roots. The other tbsp is used on the rest of my hair.

Thanks Oooop2,

If I use combs or my denman brush, I have HUGE hair balls. Hence why I needed to find another way to detangle my hair....

Yeah...It makes the best T/O and once I am done, I can easily retwist and start all over again.

I forgot to add that one the days I 'WASH' my hair, I mix baking soda and a small amount of poo to a bowl. After I have wet my hair, I apply this mix t/o hair (but concentrating most of my roots). I then rinse w/cool water making sure that all of the baking soda and poo are out of my hair. I then proceed w/ applying the condish as noted in the beginning of this post. I use poo about 1x every 2-3wks....

Oooop2, beautiful self twists. I look forward to my hair growth so that I can do my own twists. I 've gone to a braider since my BC who does a great job on my twists but I know I will not continue to pay her $50.00 for my twists. Once my hair gains length the very precise, straight parting will matter less so I'll be doing my own after a few months. Thanks.

Nice! Do you have any pics of your chunkier twists?

This link shows how my hair looks in chunky twist. I then to put them up in a flower ponytail for a cuter look...

Yes, it definitely is nice being able to do your own hair. But after being the barber and doing mine and my kids hair for over the past 3.5yrs (unable to find someone to do my hair/cut my hubby's hair in our area in Japan), I am SO looking forward to a bit of natural salon pampering when we move back to the USA this month..LOL
