ok, so my mom used to have thick hair but with age (she's 66) and the use of those glue on weaves it had thinned out. for awhile it seemed like it was thickening out, but then she started wearing wigs without a wig cap and now it's reverting and becoming badly out of shape. can anyone reccomend the top 5 products and the top 5 things she should be doing to get her hair back in shape?
TIA

thickhair: thanx for the weigh in... my mom has stopped wearing any type of weave, although she doesn't want to stop wear the wig due to the fact that her hair is about an inch long and she has to look presentable for work. i was thinking she could find a good wig cap; maybe one made of of satin fibers....

has anyone got any product suggestions?

Sounds like she needs a protein treatment QUICK since it broke to only an inch long? Let's see..
1) protein/recontructor
2) be extrememly gentle in handling/manipulating
3) scalp massages (jojoba/peppermint EO)
4) nioxin products
5) balanced diet,water,multivitamin

I strongly suggest your mother see a dermatologist. Hope all turns out okay.

How does your mom wear her hair before the wig? I wonder if she cornrowed it and then wrapped her head with a satin scarf before wearing the wig if it wouldn't help? The cornrows would ensure little manipulation. It'd be like wearing a weave just without the weight or glue that'd pull on the cornrows. Whoever does her cornrows would've to be very gentle and not make them too tight. Someone probably used to doing little kids' hair. If she can try using the info given/products recommended on www.add-hair.com she might be able to undo the damage. Also I have heard enough wonderful things about emu oil shampoo/conditioner so perhaps she can look into using them. Check out http://www.emusingsecrets.com/haircare.html or even the hairloss link. And I highly recommend sleeping in a plastic cap or Saran wrap. Especially the few days following a protein treatment. It'll help super moisturize her hair so it doesn't break. If she can get used to wearing the plastic under her wig instead of satin - esp with winter coming up - I'd say keep it on. I mean, if the baggy technique helps our ends stay intact, I can only imagine it all over all the hair will do wonders for it. In fact, didn't someone post a couple of months ago how keeping her hair hidden from the air was beneficial to her? Oh and tell her to think positively; worrying and stressing will only make the problem worse. (BTW Emu oil is also believed to reverse graying hair.

I wear wige and I put a satin scarf (or rather keep on the one I wore to bed) under my wig and I've suffered no damage. I actually think wigs will be beneficial for her if she keeps her head covered so her edges don't get scratched by the wig and she keeps her hair moisturized (I use plain ole vaseline, doesn't matter that it's greasy, you have a wig on!). I think if she just keeps it moisturized to its fullest and leaves it alone, it will start growing in, then you could start her on a more complicated regimen where she can wear her own hair.

thanx everyone! she bought a satin beanie style cap to wear under the wig; and i talked her into buying some surge to use with a little vaseline to seal it in. i also gave her some keraphix to use bi weekly in order to strenghthen her hair...

i've been interested in emu oil for the longest but i've never had the courage to try it out. i think now is the time. *L* i'll use her as a guinne pig...
