Congrats on going natural!
When I went natural I had the same problem. Sigh, it took nothing but good ole trial and error.
Trust and believe I tried everything under the sun, but the only thing that 'loosened, moisturized and softened' my hair as you say was Worlds of curls gel. I got it from Walmart in the jar (blue top). It has oil in it, and it was literally the only thing that made me happy and helped me for the transition out of TWA.
Now years later, I use Giovanni Direct Leave in. I also use it in my daughter's hair, it makes it soft and moisturized, but it doesn't shine like the juice did. lol
Oh and the only conditioner that makes my hair super soft and manageable is Aussie Moist. So be sure you are not using too much protein as well, that will make your hair dry/hard.

Look at the Ceramides Challenge, can't post the link because i'm on my phone. I think you'll benefit from the oils if your hair is constantly dry.

This is something that I am struggling with now. I will agree with the other ladies when they say it's trial and error. Everything that "should" work, doesn't work. Aloe Vera juice, olive oil, castor oil, kinky curly leave-in, Hawaiian silky, Dominican leave-ins, EVERYTHING!!!
As of midnight of 11/24 going into 11/25 I got a sew-in (yay for me!!!) to help me during the rough winter months. I just know my hair will get drier as the cold weather draws near. I purchased the scalp mist and leave-in mist from shescentit.com today. I'm also going to use sulfur and WGO on my scalp a few times a week. If this doesn't work, I'm going to become a professional mixologist.

I've been natural for 2 years but this is my first winter season with my own hair out....and it's incredibly dry. My usual leave-in is not working so I intend to cowash tomorrow (on vacation) and just use the conditioner as a leave-in until I get back home to NYC. It seems that I need something heavier than my aloe vera juice and oil mix.

This is exactly what I did. Great advice. I still haven't found a holy Grail leave in but like I said this is great advice.

I forgot about kinky curly. Its too expensive for a little bit but that always was nice on my hair. Which reminds me that a lot like kimmays leave in too.

Joico Moisture Recovery Balm, hands down. No, it's not all natural but it gets the job done and does so extremely well. $17 at Ulta. If you get the sunday paper they almost always have a coupon.
I just noticed you said moisturizer. When using Joico there's not many moisturizers that don't work for me I switch between Scurl and Giovanni

After all of the store bought hair products that I have purchased to make my hair soft and moisturized I realized that unrefined shea butter, cold pressed EVOO, and water works wonders for my extremely thick fine strand 4b hair.
Matter of fact I sectioned my hair off in about 10 sections this morning and cleared it out by using a water spray bottle to moisturize it, cleared it out from tips to root with a plastic afro pick, then added EVOO to it and the pick went through it like butter.
I will no longer purchase store bought hair products because I think the all of the extra stuff is not needed...at least for my hair.

i have used the following with success:
darcys botanicals leave-in
komoza shea butter lotion
komaza coconut curl lotion
oyin hair dew
i apply these to wet hair after i wash to detangle.....i apply a mix of kukui, olive, meadowfoam, coconut and castor a few times a week on dry hair. the komaza and oyin are glycerin free i think.
