I've always had a problem with my scalp producing too much sebum and my hair tends to be oily (w/ no product). I don't put anything on my scalp and sometimes I put Hollywood beauty carrot oil on my ends to keep them straight. I use the Motions CPR mostly every week except for the ocassions every couple of weeks when I use Shea Butter Cholesterol mixed with castor oil. I use a clarifying shampoo once a week. I was using CON green label shampoo but my hair would look like really oily/greasy after using that and a deep conditioner.

What can I do/use to keep my hair from being oily? I don't want it too dry but I don't want to always look like I have oil or grease on my hair.

Also, I just put a black color in my hair and it looks like I OD'd on the serum or something when all I did was wash and deep condition and flat iron it.

Have you tried Aveda Scalp Benefits Balancing Shampoo? I think its a great shampoo for oily hair and IMO its not drying at all. I use it and my hair isnt all that oily. This is what it says:

Healthy hair begins with a healthy scalp. That's why our daily formula:

• cleans down to the root
• removes excess sebum and buildup
• creates the ideal foundation for healthy hair

TIPS:
Certain habits contribute to a dry, itchy, flaky scalp:
• not rinsing thoroughly
• using water temperature that's too hot
• lack of scalp massage

I tried this about a year ago and it was ok but I still had the same problem. It dried it out for about a day and then it was oily when I woke up the next morning. I started washing my hair everyday at one point but since i work and go to school i cant wash and rollerset and deep condition everyday cuz i get home at 11:30 am every night

Wow thats tough...goodluck chica :ohwell:. I was going to recommend sea breeze on the scalp or ACV rinses to keep your pH balance in check but i dont like recommending things i havent tried myself. I have tried the acv rinse, but not for that purpose.

You know, I've been using the Dandrex Hair Tonic from the Druide line. Although it's technically a dandruff treatment, I find that it controls the oil on my scalp well. It doesn't dry my hair out at all. I apply it at night and wash it out in the morning.

They have an oily hair shampoo, which I plan to use as a clarifying shampoo, that is supposed to be really good. It's called Purity Shampoo. It should be arriving in the mail today. I'll report back after I've tried it out for a while :yep:

ETA Ingredients for Dandrex:
Purified Water, Witch Hazel Extract, White Nettle Extract, Ginseng Extract, Burdock Extract, Green Tea Extract, Glycerin, Sodium Shale Oil Sulfonate, Tea Tree Oil, Rosemary Oil, Lemongrass Oil, Clary Sage Oil, Thyme Oil, Chamomile Oil, Panthenol, Pyridoxine, Rosemary Extract, Grapefruit Seed Extract.

Do you think it would help if I used my clarifying shampoo everyday? I am going to try to wash and use it everyday. I dont actually mind if my hair gets dry because I have pretty good moisturizers that will help. Im for it as long as my hair doesnt become hard. I may try the ACV rinse but I don't know too much about it, what exactly is it?

My scalp also gets pretty oily after a couple of days. What I do is to make sure I add no oils to my scalp at all and I use water based moisterizers. When I cowash, I do make sure I rinse completely, leaving no conditioner residue.

Don't use a harsh shampoo because that can really strip your hair I don't recommend seabreeze on the scalp either. Our scalps are supposed to produce oils, but being that most of us don't have type 1 or 2 hair, its just a little harder to get it down the hair shaft.

To help my scalp oils to move down the hair shaft I also massage my head. (this also feels really good!)

I have to make sure I do not add a lot of oil to my hair because it becomes a hard stringy mess so the amounts I use are extremly small. So I may use about 8 drops total for my whole head.

I've found that I can't go too product heavy either.

It can be a hard balance to strike, but it does take a bit of experimentation to find what works for you.

Here's the thing: My scalp didn't used to be oily. It got oilier when I started washing more often. Washing often is best for my hair so I'm not going to stop. My roots aren't super oily, but the Dandrex does seem to keep my scalp more balanced.

Now if you're starting out with really oily hair, then clarifying every day probably isn't the best thing to do, as it's actually more likely to cause an increase in oil production after a while. People with oily hair are usually advised not to use too harsh shampoos or wash too often because it will actually aggravate the condition, though it seems counterintuitive. Just like people with oily or problem skin are advised against using harsh, drying cleansers because it just makes the skin produce more oil to counteract the dryness.
If you want to try shampooing more often, I wouldn't use a clarifying poo. I'd use something much milder and see how that works out. You want to keep your scalp clean but you don't want to remove too much oil or moisture because your scalp will start working overtime to replace it, which is NOT what you want.

I guess I'll just stick to my regimen and wash once a week instead, maybe twice. I don't mind my hair being oily after 8 weeks post relaxer because it makes my new growth softer and easy to deal with but when I am 1-8 weeks post relaxer it tends to make my hair look like I put too much grease in it. Generally if I put a cotton scarf on and leave it on for 2 days straight my hair wont be so bad but I generally dont have 2 days to sit around in the house with a scarf on my head.
