After spending this morning convinced I have some kinda sickness :ohwell: I now think this is pregnancy related.

My new growth, about a couple inches worth of hair, is growing in straight. Maybe a slight wave of curl in some areas.

Is this normal? Has this happened to you? How do I fix this?!

I have heard of pregnancy changing the texture of hair. It didn't affect mine, but from what I have read there are women who experience this.

natural for years, i just noticed how straight it is yesterday.
i honestly thought it was just thinning why my roots felt different from the rest of my hair.
then i got a good look at it yesterday and was shocked. it's not thinning it's just straight.
oh and my son is 10 weeks old, i guess i started noticing what i thought was thinning just 8 weeks ago

Ok i was thinking it could damage from previously relaxed hair but I think you've been natural for why to long for that. It maybe from pregnancy, i would talk with your obgyn.

I don't think it's fixable per se...cause my crown grows kinda straight now too, and the front is 3a. Liquid amino's helped a fair amount, but it is what it is. Lol, this is your body post-pregnancy... It's like being a whole new person sometimes.

My hair got wavy, nearly straight with both of my pregnancies. My son is 3 months old and now it's curly again. I thought maybe my hair was weighed down by the length or it was over moisturized or henna loosened the curl or something but the curls came back all of a sudden!

Thanks ladies, so I guess this is something I just wait out.

Nobody ever tells you this can happen after pregnancy!! You only hear about the shedding/hair loss.

Sheesh!

My curl pattern loosened after my son. It never changed back. My edges fell out too. They grew back though.

Wait it out. Takes about a year to see what your hair will be. It's the hormones.

Meanwhile, enjoy that gorgeous baby!

Could it be that the hairs are finer? I've not had a recent pregnancy, but my hair has gotten much finer this past year. It's not thinner, just a finer strand. I think mine is hormone related.

@Whimsy, it's hormonal.

Q: In the past few months, my curly hair has been growing in straight. Could this be due to the new dye my colorist is using—or is it my fluctuating hormones?

A:It's probably not the dye that's changing your hair texture, says David H. Kingsley, PhD, author of The Hair-Loss Cure: A Self-Help Guide. But hormonal shifts—like those that occur during puberty, pregnancy, and menopause—can alter the shape of the hair follicle. (Think of the follicle as a tube: If it has a slight curve, the hair grows in curly; if it doesn't, the hair grows in straight.) Hormonal changes can also affect the diameter of the hair, making it coarser or finer. [Bold, mine]

Keep in mind: As your texture changes, consider switching shampoo and conditioner, says hairstylist Ryan Trygstad of the Marie Robinson Salon. If you had thick, curly hair that's now growing in straighter and finer, you'll have better hair days if you choose lighter products formulated for your new type. (Try Pantene Pro-V Fine Hair Solutions Flat to Volume Shampoo, $5, or Dove Volume Boost Conditioner, $4, drugstores.)
