My Hair Doesn't Like S-Curl

It's amazing how some products work for some and not others.

On this forum, S-curl is one of the most popular moisturizers. Because it's so highly-reviewed, last month, I decided to try it.

The results were terrible. My hair ended up puffy and mushy.

I will keep trying other moisturizers until I find what works for me.

Sometimes, I feel as if my hair is different from of the other ladies on this forum.

I cant use any of those juicy stuff..s-curl, hawaiian silky 14/1..none of it..it makes my hair draw in all the moisture from the atmosphere and puff..I gave those up..long ago

*Nonie eyes@vtoodler suspiciously*:scratchch

Pray do tell, exactly how did you use it?

Was your hair wet or dry?

Was it the spray?

What's the climate there?

Did you do the dance and chant and meditate :meditate:before you used it?

So many factors to consider....

Lol @ "pray do tell"....

I haven't used S Curl in a hot minute...thanks for reminding me bc my hair actually did like it. My hair LOVES glycerin sprays.

Right now i'm on a Oyin juice kick. I also liked the Bee Mine spray and since i'm not really doing CG anymore i'm gonna go back to using up my Hawaiian Silky:yep:

S-Curl doesn't work for me either. People praised it so highly, but it left my hair feeling filmy, coated, yucky. And it didn't moisturize.

@vToddler, if there is any possibility that it will work for you, Nonie is the one to get you on the right track. She knows all the ins and outs of how to use it.

You could try your own version of curl juice, just add vegetable glycerin to water in a pray bottle, and try that out, without all the extra ingredients. I use approx. 1:4 glycerin to water ratio.

I applied S-Curl after washing and deep-conditioning.

In the past, I use grease and flat iron my hair after deep conditioning (I know that flat ironing and grease are bad, which is why I've trying to come up with a new regimen). Nevertheless, believe it or not, grease actually tames my hair. It's hard to flat iron without it. Below is a link to grease that I used to use:

When I put the S Curl in, it didn't really feel like it sunk in. It just sat there. With other moisturizers, like Neutrogena NTM Silk Touch, it penetrates somewhat. I tried to style my hair afterward.

But it ended up looking really puffy and terrible. When it dried, it was like a bush. The only way that I could tame it was with grease and a flat iron.

Afterward, I felt really bad because I know that I should not use grease and flat irons on my hair.

*Nonie squints Charla as if in bright light* How did you use it Charla? Details please...before and after. Also how did you wear your hair?

Finally, other people who can relate to what I am going through. My hair hates S-Curl and all the other products that contain glycerin, so that means no juices for me. It's odd, because I was able to use Hawaiian Silky a few years ago and my hair was fine, but when I tried it sometime last year, my hair stayed dry. :perplexed

My mom's hair seems to be opposite of mine and likes almost everything she puts in it, but she recently tried S-Curl and it also made her hair dry.:ohwell:

For me, it does nothing on my wet hair. Actually it does, it dries it out. Although Nonie has a method of applying it to wet then to dry hair. I just put it on dry hair and I get instant moisture. I would never use this if I was going to flat iron my hair.

vtoodler, sorry I'm slow or tired. So you used it immediately after DCing after...
1) Was that on damp or dry hair?

2) Also you then talk about grease and straightening...did you use S Curl on a day you wanted to wear your hair straight? In other words you used it then applied grease to straighten? Or you straightened with grease then applied S Curl to moisturize?

3) One last thing, do you know if you have low porosity? In other words, does your hair get wet with difficulty and take long to dry?

4) Where do you live? Is it humid or dry? (I think S Curl might suck in Arizona)

Sorry for all the questions. In the past, I've been able to see what folks did that might've thwarted their results. Not saying everyone WILL like S Curl, but as you have seen, some folks did hate it initially but come to like it later. I've also got PMs with similar updates. So just as faithVA said, so that what you have doesn't go to waste, I'd like to help you get some good use out of it if I can...by perhaps tweaking your method. I numbered the questions to make it easy for you to answer. TIA

allmundjoi, the reason I apply it to damp hair is because usually I need to be some place formal and so I need to have my hair combed after washing it, and I cannot comb it bare, nor will I use anything else on it. So I need the S Curl to provide the slip needed for combing and styling...otherwise, I'd probably wait to use it just on dry hair if I had nowhere to be. I don't apply it to dripping wet hair. It's usually towel-dried, damp hair.

@Kimiche do you use it with anything else? On damp hair or dry? I know Hawaiian Silky is apparently better on damp than dry. Have you changed anything in your regimen since back when you liked it? Moved to a different climate?

Again, if not, then OK, your hair just doesn't like it. But it's funny how as we grow and learn more, we start to do more stuff that becomes second nature and we forget something we did differently. Every now and then you'll read someone writing, "OMG, that's how I used to do it. Why did I change? No wonder it didn't work!" Usually we're doing something right that deems something below par now that we've found something better. But other times, there's a step we've added that throws things off...while a simple regimen just seems to work better.

I remember someone PMing me that she used to use S Curl along with something else. I suggested she quit messing up a good product :whip: (tongue-in-cheek :p ) and use it unadulterated. She later reported how much she liked it now and couldn't believe how easy it was to wash off too.

Nonie, lol. I will need you to change your name to Dr. S-Curl. What an amazing and thorough pre-moisturization examination questions.

Nonie

I know you're the S-Curl Police :goodcop: but no details needed! I tried it, I hated it. Period, the end. Who's gonna arrest me?

Charla  I was only trying to be helpful. No one's making you do what you don't wanna do. Thought when people ask for tips and complain about their hair being dry they really care to learn something new. Maybe you didn't really need my help but I asked in case I could offer tips that can help someone who cares to give it another try and who might've done what you did.

WTF is wrong with a bunch of folks on LHCF? No effin sense of humor or any interest in sharing info. Acting like er'ybody has some agenda. GTFOOHWYBS. And that goes for everyone else who thinks I post on this forum to cause strife. I like a discussion and sometimes out of it someone benefits. Heck even I learn something in an interaction where I started off giving tips.

I do miss good ol' LHCF. This new atmosphere effin sucks.

ETA: I am sorry it sucked for some of you. My hair loves it.
