I graduated from college on Saturday (yay me!
) and for my graduation I decided to straighten my hair. At first I was going to wear it down and curly but I was afraid it would look funny under my cap. Plus, people kept asking me to straighten it so they could see how long it is (I've been wearing it curly since I got the relaxed ends cut off in August).
It took me FOREVER to straighten it the morning of my graduation. Even though I washed it the night before, banded it (to stretch the curls), and let it airdry. I used a CHI flat iron and biosilk heat protectant, but my hair came out really big and puffy. It didn't help that my ends were bad and that I hadn't used a flat iron for probably a year and a half. So I ended up putting it in a ponytail (so it would fit under my graduation cap). The plus side was I hadn't realized how long my hair had gotten. It shrinks so much when I wear it curly that it's hard to see the true length.
After examining my ends closely I realized that I should probably get them cut. And since my hair was already straightened I decided to go for it. This other natural from my school (who wears her hair straight a lot) recommended Great Clips to me. I decided to go for it. I've had my hair cut at white salons before so I wasn't really nervous. There were about 4-5 stylist there, only a 10 minute wait time, and they only charged $13 dollars. Overall I'm satisfied with the job they did. It's a little shorter than I thought it would be, but my ends needed to be cut and they feel so much better.
Here is a before photo. This was at the end of the day so my hair was even puffier than it was that morning.
Another before shot.
Here's a close-up pic of my raggedy ends.
Here are some after pics from my cut. It's a little shorter than I thought it would be.
The length change is really obvious when it's in a ponytail.
So far I like my cut b/c I knew my ends needed it. But for me, the real test of how I like this haircut will come when I wash it tonight and see how my hair looks curly. Since I wear my hair curly most of the time. I also hope I don't find any heat damage to my hair. I was rushing to straighten it at the end and turned up the temp of the flat iron. I used more heat protectant on those parts so I hope I am okay.
