My first braidout attempt ! *pics*

For those who aren't aware, I am a true salon baby, I've had my standing appointmet at the salon for years, but i'm trying to learn how to do my own hair. I'm natural, and here in cali it's been in the 90s this week, so i'm going to have to do without the pressing comb for a while. Last night i attempted to do a wash and go, but it turned out horribly so i braided it up for the night and this morning this is what I had ! Should I rock this style for a couple days? Or go get my hair pressed today? Help me out sisters !

Truthfully I'm not feeling it and I don't want you walking around outside like that. Based on your sig pic I am SURE that you can do a much much better braidout with the right product and technique.

If you wear this for a couple of days, i would say push it all back, fluff it out a little and throw on a cute silk type scarf, keep the back out and throw on some cute hoop earrings.

I appreciate the honesty, sis ! I wasn't even truthfully attempting a braidout last night, i just braided it up to go to sleep so it wouldn't tangle. What products would you reccoment? I just used shea butter and coconut oil. And also, how many braids? I only did about six, of all different sizes.

It looks good for a first attempt, my first braidout was a disaster! Maybe try it again with smaller braids, I hear people have great results with smaller braids. You hair in your siggy is thick and looks like it would yield an awesome braidout! All said with love!

I would think that 6-10 braids would be cool but it's all trial and error. I was just watching a youtube of a technique I am going to try soon. I'll post the link in a moment, i have to refind it.

Also, for products what you are using looks good to me but i can't tell if your hair loves it or not. AGain, trial and error. There is absolutely nothing wrong with trying out new products (within your budget of course) to see what works for your hair.

Right now for my twist outs i use Herbal Essence Long Term Relationship leave in conditioner and the Hot 6 Oil ( i think that's what it's called). I'm in southern cali as well so I hear you on the heat and hair concerns!!

If you can cornrow, do like 10-12 braids and the same amount for plaits but all around the same size. Make sure to do a plait that is a little bit larger than the rest in your crown area. As for product, I use Neutrogena Triple Moisture Leave-In or HE Long Term Relationship Leave-In depending on whichever one is closest to me. I usually seal with coconut oil afterwards. Smaller braids equal bigger hair!

For a first time, it's OK. It will get better with practice.

product is key....especially when you're doing it on dry straight hair. smaller sections are better....you will get a better wave definition. if you don't use a good product that will smooth and HOLD that pattern then you'll end up with inconsistent wave results. keep trying and you'll get it

These were the EXACT videos that I copied when I did my braid out last night (I just posted pics of my attempt). I loved the results!

I totally agree. After a month of product trying I found out with the help of Melodie815 that unrefined shea butter and IC gel is great. I use it on my bantu knots and they come out "salon" quality. I apply it to freshly washed and conditioned hair and sit under the dryer for an hour.

Try bantu knots. You'll love them.
