my edges grow nothing but dandruff

I have been co-washing atleast 3 days a week, moisturizing and sealing, dc, oil rinses etc and applying my BT and MN mix with some success (thus far) to retain moisture and gain growth. My edges from temple to temple are not budging and they seem to have a complete different agenda and scalp texture than the rest of my hair... Every other day I can scratch up humongoid flakes off this particular section. IMO it is the same freeking length it was when I joined LHCF. WHAT GIVES?!?!:wallbash:

ps. its not product build-up I tested that theory

I read somewhere that dandruff can be caused by excess oil.....here is ONE cause of dandruff... g

Today most skin specialists agree that dandruff is associated with a tiny fungus called Pityrosporum ovale, P. ovale for short.
This fungus lives on our bodies and scalp all the time, usually without causing a problem. Unfortunately, for some people, it can increase in numbers, leading to dandruff.
Additional Causes of Dandruff

Dandruff is seasonal. It is most severe during the winter and mildest during the summer. The most common symptom of dandruff is scaling with occasional itching.
Dandruff scales usually occur as small, round, white-to-gray patches on top of the head. Scaling can occur anywhere on the scalp, in the hair, on the eyebrows, the beard and can spread to the neck and shoulders.
Dandruff is often known as "dry scalp", but people with oily scalps tend to suffer most. An oily scalp also supports the growth of P. ovale.

:perplexed Shouldn't the MN be killing the fungus that causes dandruff?
I used coconut oil and it helped a little bit with the dandruff, but sulfur 8 worked the best for me.

I have dandruff and when it acts out really bad, then I switch to my dandruff shampoo by matrix called Actrol. I shampoo with that twice (second time letting sit on hair) and then rinse. It usually will go away for a while, but it is really bad in the winter time.:ohwell:

I may be wrong, but I don't think fungus causes dandruff.
Sulfur 8 or MTG always helped my dandruff too :yep:

I was going off this because I heard this too.

My MN mix has Sulfur 8 in it. I also use BT so my sulfur supply is pretty substantial and you would think it would be ridding me of the dandruff but I am thinking that in this particular area of my head, the sulfur is maybe causing it. Since I co-wash so often, my scalp is technically never dirty.

Do you wear a wrap with an elastic band around the edges? I think that might have been the cause of a lot of my problems perhaps it irritates your edges. Also too high heat when using a hooded dryer can cause the scalp to dry out and flake. I'm about to start trying Shikakai, Vatika, and Amla oils and powders to try to get rid of mine.

Wowzers, is it possible to be allergic to something in justone part of your scalp? I am really thinking about going to the dermatologist

TT8, I found that when I used BT or Surge, I get a type of flaking also that seem to only attack my edges. I believe it may be the sulfur that's affecting my scalp though not dandruff. Why I say that is because the flakes I am getting are dark, not white like dandruff, almost like I am being slightly burned so I dilute my mix now with BB oil moisturizer or BB growth hair lotion and that helps me a lot.

Yes!!!! this is exactly what is happening to me... I have lots of essential oils in my mix so I contemplated if I needed more or less.

BUMPING!!!!
DOES ANYBODY ELSE GET BROWN FLAKES NEAR THEIR EDGES WHEN USING BT,SURGE OR ANY OTHER SULFUR PRODUCT?!?!?!?!?!

You might be doing TOO much and using too many products on your scalp. Remember that your edges are much more sensitive than the rest of your scalp. It's not about product buildup, its about you mixing all those different things into a cocktail and putting it on your edges--- your scalp in that area might be reacting to it in a negative way. If you just calm down and not overdo it you should be fine. When my chunk of hair came out from traction from braids, I had applied a MN mix everyday for a week and realized the scalp in that area was flaking and peeling like sunburn and was harder than usual. I eased off doing so much to it and its already grown back pretty well.

The brown flakes could be from too many essential oils, too much sulfur, or a combination of the two. Your skin reacts negatively to too much of things like that, for example Tea Tree Oil will burn your skin and make it flake off in brown patches if you put too much on (I learned this the hard way trying to get rid of pimples as well). Too much sulfur will cause your skin to do the same thing and irritate the scalp as well.

I believe you're right because I did get those flakes the time I made the first batch of mn and sulfur with a lot of essential oils through trial and error. I will never do that again. I use my oils almost sparingly now and I use very little surge/BT when I am applying them now too with some moisturizer.

I too noticed that there were little pimples popping out on my forehead when I had put too much tea tree oil in my astringent which I threw out. Thinking about that now makes me mad at myself because I could have just gone out and buy some witch hazel and stretch it a little rather than throw it away. Ahh well, we live and learn.
