Does anyone know about the risk factors ? I'm assuming that the sulfur gets into your bloodstream and could affect the baby. Just curious because I want to start a family soon. I'm not sure how my doctor would react if I took her my bottle of MTG and asked  But, I may have to do that eventually.
Has anyone asked their doctor about this before ??

Thanks!!

Please ASK your doctor! Please don't trust your future baby's health to a HAIR product.

Good luck with your growing family!:)

Thanks Curlidiva ! I'm not going to risk my baby's health for hair. I was curious to see if anyone had asked about it. Thanks!!

Co-signing. Exactly what I was thinking. Why take the risk? You can try it after you have the baby. Long hair is not as important as a healthy baby. Good luck with your pregnancy.

Harigeek, my little one is now 6 months old and I'm still nursing. I recently bought 2 big bottles of MTG after reading all teh rave reviews about it and have used it 2x this last week. I must admit that it had never crossed my mind to find out about the potential ill effects of using it while breastfeeding -so thanks for raising this question! I have asked 2 obstetricians / gynaecologists that took care of me while I was pregnant - one is an older (mid 50s), has been practising for years gynae and has a very carefree attitude without necessarily being risky and her view was that provided I wasn't dosing my daughter with it, it should be ok. The other is a much younger, just started out gynae and is keen to prove herself and she said that she'd do research on the ill-effects of sulphur based products. I just spoke to her today and she says that she can't say it's 100% ok - she suggests that I rather take the cautious approach and not use it. Fyi, I didn't tell them specifically what the product is - I just said that I'm using a sulphur based product on my hair - I heard it's really good for hair and dandruff etc etc. I made one last call to another gynae on Friday who specialises in checking for deformities in foeti - u kno, he checks for the chnces of the baby having down syndrome and that sort of stuff (I saw him 2x while pregnant) - I'm really keen to hear what he has to say as he is more of a researching type gynae. I expect to speak to him this week - I'll be more specific withhim about what it is and will post his reponse here. I'm kind of unsure what todo now - I really really like MTG. My hair's been rsponding to it very well - can't really assess growth at this stage but it gets a fab sheen from it and I really like that. Seems I'll have to do away with it for now - I'm expecting my surge to arriev any day now. So manybe I'll just use that until my baby's off the breast (which could be a while!!! :ohwell: )
Blessings

Wow great information Stunningmane! I love that you've already started doing this research. Hopefully I'll be seeing my doctor soon and will definitely ask the same. I've also been doing some research on the internet and I've not found anything about using sulphur products while pregnant. However, I was surprised to find many warnings against using rosemary oil in your hair during pregnancy  That was news to me!
Thanks again for the excellent info! Please keep us posted!

Also Congratulations on the new baby!!!

Thanks Harigeek! I also tried researching on the net - I found nothing useful unfortunately. Will be in touch soon. Let me know what you find out should you discuss this with a doctor.

Harigeek,

I finally got a response from the last obstetrician I had on my list. As I said, this question falls within his line of work. He specialises in screening foeti for abnormalities at 16 and 20 odd weeks. He is also a Professor of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and Fetal Medicine at one university here. I was (as I had promised I would be in my earlier post) pretty specific about the product - this is what I wrote...

"I have also read that a product called Shapley's MTG (Mane-Tail-Growth, originally developed by a barber) is good for stimulating hair growth. The MTG contains sulphur and some parafeinic product. Are these safe to use as I am still nursing? I have consulted two obstetricians for their view on the use of sulphur based products on one's scalp - one thinks it's ok, the other can't say that it's unsafe but has recommended that I exercise caution and not use it. I would appreciate your opinion as I think that this is more in your
line of work. "

His response was as follows :

"The second question whether your hair product that contains Sulphur is safe to use during nursing, the answer is yes, it can be used during nursing".

I unfortunately forgot to ask whether it would be ok to use when one is pregnant. So that's essentially 2 out of 3 obstetricians who have said that it is ok to use and both of these are extremely experienced doctors in this line of work. The third did not say that it is unsafe - she merely said that she cannot say with 100% certainty that is safe and it is better to rather take precautions and not use it. It's a relief to hear all this but I'm still unsure as to whether I am going to continue. I am so sold on MTG! :ohwell:

Thanks for the additional info, Stunningmane, but I think I'll not be taking any risks. I honestly don't think sulfur is a problem but something slightly abnormal is certainly happening with MTG - additional growth and hair fullness - so it must be doing something to my system.
Thanks again!!
