Hey,

I need your help. I am at the stage would I love to start transitioning to become natural. I tried and said this before but now I am really really serious. I even brought a wig for the first time just so I wont comb my hair. Anyhow, I told my mother last week that I am planning on transitioning and her responds was not good. First she ask me why would I do that. 2nd what made me decide to become natural. Then she went on to tell me that it would not be appropriate and that my hair was extremely tough and that I would have a difficult time with my hair becuase she states that it is "nappy".

Is there anyone here who has what they say "nappy" hair and how do you manage it? What are some hair styles that I can do? I just need help in general. O is their a way that I can loosen my curls

Thanks,
I need much help and encouragement

Aw, I'm so sorry to hear that your mother reacted this way. My mom was not as harsh, but I think some of her comments influenced me ending my first attempt to transition. I went 5 months, then relaxed again.

My advice is to keep your head up. Once you make your choice, stick to it! There are lots of ladies here with 4b - 4z hair who "manage" it. In fact, their hair thrives. There is a transitioners support thread as well. Best of luck, and I'm hope some naturals will chime in with suggestions.

Frequent cowashing and DCing can keep anyone's hair from being hard-to-manage. As far as loosening your curls, BKT can temporarily do this, but is basically a really expensive chemical process. Coconut-lime treatments and bentonite clay can give the appearance of loosened curls, but to my knowledge that is extremely temporary as well. No one that I know of has successfully done this, but then again most people I have encountered on LHCF that have been apprehensive about their texture/curl pattern have come to love and embrace it.

How many weeks post are you? I feel that once you get to a certain point you will be able to assess whether you want to continue or not. If not, you can always just pretend it was a really long stretch.

It's tough when you are the only one in your family starting a journey like this. Good luck to you.
