Forgive me if a thread has already addressed this, but I can not for the life of me find a moisturizer that keeps my rollersets or flat ironed hair looking light and fresh; I can't take it anymore. I feel like it has to be one way or the other, and considering the line of work I am trying to get into, I am always finding myself sacrificing moisture for "the look" of flowing breezy hair, but this has not come without its setbacks. My ends got so chewed out over the last two months I had to take to scissors to it far more intensely then I'd like. I have gone from APL to shoulder length again.
Now although I am comfortable at this length, I don't want to have to do this again anytime soon, ladies please help me out!

If you want to be able to forgo the moisturizers on a daily or semi-daily basis then your DCing needs to be on point, that means moisture and protein. If your hair is well moisturized by your DC's and leave-ins before straightening, you shouldn't need to use a heavy moisturizer between time. What do you DC and moisturize with and how often do you do it?

I think Shtow only uses serums on her hair between straightening (I could be wrong though).

I recently rollerset my hair. After I washed and all the regimen stuff, I added my leave-in condish, moisturize with NTM leave-in, and seal with coconut oil or heat protectant. When I'm rollersetting, I literally rub a dab of NTM on my fingertips, and then on the tips of my hair. My hair turned out quite well. It was light and fluffy.

What do you do to protect your ends when you're wearing your hair out?

As of right now I am alternating DCs with Miss Keys Wheat Germ oil condish and Rossels (sp?) Sole and Cinnamon conditioner. I use to to use Hair one, or leave-in and seal with oil, but this would always have my hair weight down, and its not like I have fine hair either.

After I wash, condition and do my leave-ins, I add nothing to protect my hair throughout the week as of now. I use aphogee green tea keratin as my heat protectant, alternate with moisturizing leave ins and finish up with Organix coconut serum before rollersetting, blowdrying or flat ironing.

Do you think that maybe you're using too much product? Maybe nix the aphogee as a heat protectant since you have the Organix?

I just started using this within the last 2 weeks and love it.

Cantu Shea Butter Leave In Conditioning Repair Cream

I was actually going to say what MSA said.. I decided to go natural pretty much at the height of my relaxed hair happiness (just wanted to be natural, lol) and I found that it was hard to find a good moisturizer, but as long as I DC'd well it really didn't matter. (I also washed frequently and airdried.) If you are unable to find a really good leave-in, I really think this will help.

As a natural who likes to straighten every now and again, and have fine hair, I like to use NTM leave in on my ends or I use Qhemet Burdock Root Cream on my ends and seal with Amla Oil (the light one). My hair stays fly and fresh for at least a week.

HTH

have you tried neutogena triple moisture leave in conditioner(NTM)??? its very light and could be exactly what youre looking for.

I use a spray moisturizer (Frizz Ease Daily Nourishment right now). You don't need a lot just a fine mist, then I seal with coconut oil on the ends only. This is very light and keeps my hair moisturized.

It took me a while to find something that worked for my fine hair. I also found out that I don't need to moisturize and seal every day.

I :love2:this. No matter how much I use, it doesn't weigh my hair down. I think it is water based. I always buy this from TJ MAXX for $3.99. HTH

MSA you are on point with your post! I look at DCing as a base. If my base is good, everything else falls into place lovely. If you use protein as needed, the moisturizing DC's will be more effective because the protein will help the hair to keep its moisture longer. If you find your holy grail DC, then you will live without a moisturizer lol. MSA is also partially correct on me and the serum tip. I go back and forth with my reggie, honestly. And for years, I retained a lot of length just using serum in between washes because my hair was well moisturized. Some really "moisturizing" serums are Joico K pak, Fantasia for color treated hair, and PM gloss drops.

For the most part, I would advise you to stay away from water based moisturizers if you are going to wear your hair flat ironed or roller set (straight). I know some of yall want to come thru your computers and karate chop me but this is purely my opinion, to be implemented at one’s own discretion. I found that I jacked my ends up using water based moisturizers. Personally, (I’m no Gymfreak lol), I think the water based moisturizers caused friction. My hair was straight, and the moisturizer was causing frizz, which in the long run, led to breakage. My hair was being pulled in 2 different directions between being straight and reverting. Don't get me wrong, water based is not bad. I use water based in the rare occasion that I don't use heat (twist outs, buns, braid outs) because my hair is not as smooth, so it needs that extra moisture.

I do find that 1) serums or 2) penetrating EO's are best when your hair is flat ironed. My favorites are EVOO and EVCO. I use very little after I flat iron (with a heat protecting serum of course), and my hair stayed moisturized. I look at these OILS as a mini DC to my hair every night because they actually penetrate and condition the hair shaft.

Sorry I wrote a book but all in all, Id just say make sure you don't have build up, use a great DC and heat protector, and either use a serum or oil (lightly) in between washes.

Hope that helps and happy hair growing
