This one's tricky for me, but I'm sure the other ladies will weigh in...
I think it depends on the amount of moisture and protein that you are referring to. I have protein in my shampoo and conditioner so I get a boost everytime I wash my hair. I also eat lots of protein, and I take protein vitamins. This helps w/shedding.
My hair needs moisture on a fairly consistent basis to prevent breakage and offset the high amounts of protein. I get that from wetting my hair, deep conditioning, leave-ins, and oiling my scalp (which may or may not technically be considered moisture). I need all of it, and I make sure I get enough of both using my hair products, and my intake.
Too much protein can leave your hair feeling too dry, and too much moisture may also have adverse affects (i.e. over-conditioned hair). I think balance is key, but you do need both.
I started getting serious about protein when my hair started to shed. I has always used it (every other month), but that was only because my stylist recommended it. She never explained the true benefits.
I think that my hair needs moisture all of the time, but I tend to have dry hair, especially when it's natural.
You need moisture if your hair is dry due in part to external contributors. Intaking is a great way to keep your hair hydrated from the inside out. You need protein if your hair is snapping easily or is weak or compromised. Colored hair needs moisture, while relaxed hair can use protein. When I was natural I didn't use much protein b/c it wasn't needed, now that I am texturized I can see the benefits and the needs my hair now has for protein.
Everytime I go to the salon, I have to decide on this.
stylist: Deep conditioner, mami?
me: Yes, definitely
stylist: Protein or moisturizing?
*insert 8 hour pause here*
I use Humectress as my "regular" conditioner, which is a great balance of moisture and protein ; however, when I get a deep conditioner at the salon, I have recently decided on how to choose. I will get moisturizing unless:
My hair was abused that week (did my scarf come off too many times?)
I haven't had protein in over a month and a half
My hair looked damaged to me at some point
Ummm.... This is something I still need to learn about. I cant tell when I need protien either. I know I need moisture ALL the time!! My hexagon ends are dying for moisture!!
A balance of moisture and protein is good for the hair. Too much or too little is not so good. I just realized that my hair has way too much moisture- and that causes my hair to frizz terribly. Im not too big on a high content of protein in a conditione-r so I opt for using a shampoo that has protein.
this is how i differentiate...
excessive breakage/shedding = hair needs protein
excessive dryness/slight breakage = hair needs moisture
so i dont have to worry about either, i make sure my hair stays moisturized daily (esp. my ends) and i do a lite protein treatment using Aubrey Organics GPB once a week; and Nexxus Emergencee once a month.
