What could be wrong? I've been getting this relaxer for a year now with good results. The last two retouches didn't get my hair very straight. I got a relaxer last Tuesday and today it feels like I'm about 4 weeks post relaxer? My hair felt extra wavy the next day even. What's going on? Has this happened to anyone else??? Is it time to switch relaxers?

Hmmm... I've heard people say that your hair can become immune to many products incl perms. I've never experienced it, but maybe in your case it has happened. Was the perm applied using the same technique as always?

It happened to me too! I switched to Affirm last year and have not looked back. My stylist said it could be my body chemistry I had started a new pill so it could have affected how well Mizani straightened my hair.

Why some hair will not relax:

Basically, this could be due to your body chemistry. If you are on certain medications or consume large quantities of acid-laden foods or drinks such as lemon, lime, orange juice or carbonated soft drinks. Various stages of pregnancy and other conditions can lower normal body pH from 5.5 to approximately 3.5. This means that any scalp secretions, perspiration or sebum will be at the same lower pH hence causing your relaxer to be less effective. Also, heavy hair dressings can coat the lower hair shaft causing a pre-neutralizing effect on the hair prior to contact with the relaxer. Combing a relaxer cream with a pH of 12 to 13 with sufficient scalp secretions at a pH of 3.5 to 4.0 may result in a pH of 8.5 or less. This pH is generally too low to relax hair.

VERY interesting info Honi.....

VERY. I wonder if this has been my problem all along...I've got this diet coke with lemon habit. I have about 10 of them a day!

I haven't had a really "solid" relaxer experience in about a year.

Motions relaxer stopped working for me. I used it for almost 4 years then bam, stopped working. I think its true that you need to switch up ever so often.

Wow, Tracy! Becareful drinking all those Diet Cokes. I hear that the aspartame in it (or whatever artificial sweetener they use) is not good for you.

Honi- Very interesting info, indeed!

You need some serious diet coke detox! LOL

I've had this same problem after my pregnancy. My touchup really didn't take and I had a couple of wavy spots. It was so annoying because it was over 7 months since my last one and I was dying at that point. But this most certainly explains it doesn't it?

You cld be premenstual. When you are approaching that time of the month your scalp is more sensitive and ur internal ph is slightly off kilter. I use and love Mizani. this happend to me also for 2 touch ups in a row!! I scheduled a corrective relaxer after that time of the month and I was back on track.

Re: Mizani Lye is not straightening my hair anymor

Happened to me too. When I was young I used to use just for me perm and it always gio my hair straight. But I cannot use it anymore, it does not get my hair staright like it used to.

Do you do a protein conditioning treatment after relaxing? I think it was Supergirl who suggested that the protein can cause the relaxed newgrowth to revert if used too soon. The other suggestions the ladies made are pretty good too, including you may need to switch relaxers.

I'm using affirm, but I noticed this too. I think it's possible along with what Honi said that sometimes hair can become immune to a product, I think that might be the case with my Affirm no lye relaxer.

Yanno, when i was pregnant this last time, my hair hardly took to ANY relaxers. I tried both lye and no lye and had a hard time relaxing. Now, I still have motions lye, bantu lye and ultra sheen no lye in the closet, because they just...didn't work. I wonder if they'll work now that I've given birth...?
