I did one of those natural milk and lime treatments yesterday and the following day when my hair dryed it started breaking when I combed it! This is what I used: 1 cup of coconut milk and 1/2 of a small lime. I left it on for the required hour and rinsed it out, shampood twice put my conditioner on and sat under the dryer for 40 minutes. At first my hair was easier to comb than usual and my back kitchen was very straight

without me having to apply heat. I am a transitioning 4a with fine resistant hair in the back so I was surprised to see it straightened by something so simple.
I braided my hair then let it air dry over night. When I went to comb out my hair to get ready to press it, I heard snaps when I was combing it

!!!!! Before I did the treatment my hair had some elasticity in it! Now it is just a brittle mess!

What am I going to do ladies! Can you help!!

I'm not familiar with the coconut milk and lime treatment, but if I were in your situation, I would start over: hot oil treatment, shampoo/creme of nature, deep condition/ moisturizing, and then I'd braid my hair and leave it alone for a while, or pull it back in a bun for the week, or clip on a fake ponytail. Good luck and sorry to hear about your bad experience.

I did that treatment once and it dried my hair out really bad. I posted about it in another thread. I had to do several conditioning 'steam' treatments(a moisturizing condioner mixed with an oil) and rinse with distiled water bottled water almost daily to get the moisture back in my hair. That is one recipe I will not try again. I'm positive it was the lime juice.

So Sweet Cocoa you know exactly what I am talking about. My hair is so dry it is almost like some of the cuticle is striped. From now on I will stick to what I know works best. I will never try that treatment again! What are the benefits of distilled bottled water? I will concentrate on doing the conditioner rinses until my hair's elasticity is restored. Thanks so much for the suggestions.

Distilled water has no chemicals, no mierals...nothing...so you don't have to worry about your products competing with what's in the water. I swear by this. Also I found that just misting with distilled water(you can add an oil if you want) works just as well as pouring it over your head...I'm gonna post the results today.

sawyback warned about this on another thread. it makes sense! the acid in milk is what 'relaxes' the hair but u might as well use copa or rio

SweetCocoa:

Thanks for posting your experience concerning the the milk method; I was going to PM you, but I was too shy.

much appreicated.

Pandora..I don't think it was the milk so much as it was the limes...it may have been even more 'acidifying' mixed together(limes and milk).

Before you COMPLETELY give up on citrons, read below.

Yes, citrons are usually in recipes for oily hair/skin, tho if the quantity is properly adjusted they can benefit all skin/hair types. If you tend towards dryness, it's just make the problem worse IF you overdo it, but if handled well, it can produce fantastic results.

In the future, if you choose to use a citron (juice/EO) be VERY careful about the amount and type you use. Lime is quite astrigent anyway, but you can subsitiute a given citron for another....instead of lime, consider maybe lemongrass, bergamont, palmarose, or neroli. You have plenty of choices which have various benefits, just be sure not to overdo any of them.

Hope this helps.

Thanks Jamaraa...I'll keep this in mind.

British I believe Rio and Copa were supposedly natural relaxers(?) which ruined alot of women's hair...if not someone correct me.

Yes, both Rio and Copa DID ruin alot of women's hair. I don't know why fully, just that it did. My theory is that aside from whatever flaws the product(s) had, too many women left it on too long thinking a "natural" relaxer would need more time to get it straight AND that because it was "natural", it wouldn't damage the hair.

Just wanted to add that if you try this milk and citron thing again, instead of using the juice, I might add a bit of the EO to whatever basic hair oil you like and THEN add it to the milk (LOL...shake it up good). I think you'll get a better result this way.

Lastly, keep in mind that almost all citrons are light sensitive...when in the sun, they have a bleaching action. Unless you want to go a bit lighter or have hi-lights, avoid this one in the summer if you're not keeping your hair covered.

Hello SweetCocoa & jamaraa:

Correct me if I am wrong, there use to be this commercial where this man was relaxing some woman's hair on the tele, and "said it was so natural one could eat the relaxer". Then the women had taken legal action against the Manufacturers; this particular product destroyed a lot of womens' hair.

British

British...IIRC, that was the Copa commercial OR that stuff that Debbi Allen was peddling where the guy "proved" it was natural by eating it. LOL...both were of the same concept, w/ the same disastrous results for some women (and probably men too).

Hello jamaraa:

Did you say Debbie Allen, as in Fame Debbie Allen! If this is true I am so disappointed in her; please don't get me wrong it is not my place to judge anyone. I am sure there must of been some financial again in it for her, but why peddle a product that she herself did not understand the long-term affects.

British

Well, I distinctly remember Debbi doing an infomercial (I forget the name of the product tho...I'm almost tempted to say it was called Rio (kid you not)). It was the same concept as Copa, but supposed to be the "new and improved" version.

Debbi ALLEGEDLY put her money where her mouth was......she actually put some of this stuff on her teenaged daughter's head, so she said and we "saw"! Whether this was actually her daughter (possible).....and if the product actually was put on her head (I wonder?).....who knows?! All I know is that we didn't get to see the long terms results. IIRC, she did only did one infomercial for this product OR I just missed the follow ups.

I've also seen some sort of skin care product that she's endorsing at WalMart. Have I tried it...one guess! LOL

(LOL....this is JUST my thing, but I think this was the same old Copa/Rio/whatever that had either been returned or have never been used/sold.....repackaged. LOL....mean, I know, but it was REMARKABLY like the original disaster!)

BTW, YES...this same is the Debbi Allen of "Fame", those horrid Oscar shows, and sister of Phylicia Ayres-Allen formerly Rashad!

Debbie Allen did the infomercials for Copa. Same thing as Rio but under a different name. She originally taped only one commercial but they had different versions with her original segments with new testimonial segments stuck in there.

Plus I remember one woman's hair they claimed to relax in the commercial. After they were done with her 3a/b curls, her straightened hair ends were so thin and see through but homegirl kept grabbing on it talking about "It's SO silky. I can't believe it!" Yeah so silky it's invisible.

I've always used whole milk WITHOUT any limes or lemons to slightly straighten my new growth.

I've never had a problem with dryness using only milk.
