I remember when mayo was very popular in the mixologist community.

Anyone still use mayo to DC?

I know that this is an old thread with no replies but I'm thinking of starting this... I think I'm going to mix things with it... does anyone have any recent experiences with the homemade mayo treatments?

CodeRed, mayo makes an excellent protein treatment that leaves your hair soft and well conditioned. I usually mix a little olive oil into the mayo and heat it in the microwave for 10-15 seconds before applying it to my hair. I don't like the smell of mayo, so I make sure to wash my hair with a very fragrant shampoo after the treatment. HTH.

Thanks for that. I think I'm going to mix mine with some brewed tea to thin it out a bit and add some choice oil. I'm glad to know it works though. I generally take the advice and experience of the ladies on this forum above most others :yep:

CodeRed, an added benefit that I forgot to mention is that the mayo strengthens your fingernails too.

I wash it out in the kitchen sink to keep the smell of mayo from stinking up my bathroom. Sometimes, I will add a few drops of lavender to cut the smell, but I have never thought to add tea. Let me know how that turns out for you.

Will do. I was going to wait until my stash goes down but now I'm eager to try... probably in the next few days... I'll tag you when I do.

When I DC I use mayo and mix in whatever oils I have on hand. For me it's better than using banana, avacado, or yogurt.

:look: Thanks for bumping this post and to all the ladies that answered. Mayo is going to my DC emergency stash.

I've used mayo in the past as a protein treatment but I just cannot get past the smell of the mayo, it takes so many washes with a super scented shampoo to get it out and then I swear I still get whiffs of mayo. For me, I just can't with the smell.

I tried it today but I made a mistake... Just an FYI for people who are going to do this... You may not want to steam the mayo into your hair. I diluted it really well (too well... it was really runny) and it seemed to cling to my hair, made it hard and it was really hard to reverse the effect.... Next time I do this I'm going to do it the "correct" way and just put it on my head with a plastic cap and wait a few hours.

I think this is a no go for me. It made my hair hard as I would expect it to since it's a "protein" type treatment, and I mixed it in with a very light oil (camellia) but my hair is pretty dry and I co-washed it out instead of just shampooing. I left the mayo/oil mixture in my hair for about 7 hours while I went to sleep... not sure what happened but I think my hair just didn't like it.

CodeRed, 7 hours is a long time for any type of protein to be on your hair. Before you throw in the towel on mayo, just try it straight or with a tablespoon of oil mixed in and apply it to dry hair for approx. 30 mins. Sometimes, I sit under the dryer and sometimes I just put a plastic cap on and wrap a towel around my head to help the mayo penetrate my strands.

After you rinse it out, shampoo with a highly fragrant shampoo and then condition with a moisturizing conditioner. Once you see those results then you can make an honest assessment of whether mayo works for your hair or not.

I hope this helps.

My hair did not like mayo either even when I mixed it with oils to thin it out. And I gave up on putting food in my hair. I used to do an avocado mask, but I love avocados so much , I feel they deserve to be eaten than sitting on top of my head.

I think I'll try that. I'll try it next week since I'm going to be strengthening my hair for a relaxer. I really do want it to work because then that'll be even less I'm spending on my hair and I don't have to worry about any "formulation changes" in the deep conditioning department.
