Matted tangled roots, but easy going ends. What's the deal?

Sounds like new growth to me.
It happened to me while i was transitioning. My ends were straight and the roots were a hot mess. Since the new growth needed a different type of care than my permed ends and they were dry because of that, I discovered that a thick moisturizing cream like Elasta QP or Shea butter pretty much solved the problem.
If that doesn't work you might want to try and braid or twist your hair while it's drying for the curls not to revert too much.

Maybe your roots are not getting enough conditioner. maybe you can detangle the ends and then make small parts and add conditioner to make sure you are getting good coverage there.

But I am not transitioning. I've been natural for over 7 years. Is it possible that my texture/curl pattern is changing then?? Not sure why that would happen though....Or is it that the longer the hair gets, the easier/quicker it tangles?

And thanks for the suggestion, I may give that a shot and pick up a heavy moisturizer cream....this HE Condish isn't cutting it anymore. :ohwell:

Hm... I am natural too and now that I think of it I have this problem where my 4a patch is...It might be that the 4a texture needs more moisture and attention.
Other than that I really don't have any suggestions, I hope you'll figure it out.
