So, I have a consultation with a male hair-stylist in a few weeks. I have heard nothing but good things about men stylists. Any personal stories out there?

two of the best stylist I had were males. They did a realy good job on my hair and focused on hair health and also they did some really good cuts

yeah, me too. i prefer men

I would also agree with the statements posted so far. My male stylist left my salon, so I was stuck with a female. Not that that's a bad thing, but her skills in no way can compare with his.

It's a wive's tale that when men do your hair it seems to grow faster, my godbrother does hair and someone told him he has growing hands...by the way my hair did grow when I had him as my stylist, I was his guinea pig while he was going to cosmetology school, I went to him for the last time when he gave me an inside/out weave, when he first started learning how to do them, but now I can't afford him, cause he's at a salon where he's doing hair for celebrities...he got a little to expensive for my taste's...$20.00 for a trim, uh reality check, I half raised you..so i better get the discounted rate.

Back when I wore layers in my hair I had a male stylist. I would see him 2 days after my relaxer for him to trim/or maintain my layers. The man knew the difference between a cut and a trim! He was into hair health before I was!

Now when I think back about the products he recommended, were all hair care items, not things for styling. He did not want me to brush my hair..he told me to bring him my brush!

He was the one who encouraged me to wear my hair longer. I think he would be delighted to see my hair now. I miss him. He moved from Jersey to Florida.

OK, I know what I am about to say is politically incorrect but the best stylists I have had have been gay men. I currently go to a Vietnamese gay stylist who is outstanding. His cuts and colors are sheer perfection and his scalp massages are to die for!

I had two great men stylists. Both were skilled, and very much heterosexual. The last one was extremely handsome to boot.

Well of my last 3 stylists, 2 were non-hetero males. Both jacked up my hair. The first has gorgeous thick hair and I picked him out of a crowd b/c his ponytail looked better than mine! He's one of those healthy hair guys that thinks health means a hot comb instead of a relaxer. My hair doesn't even need hot combing to straighten, but it was his status quo. Anyhoo, after an aggressive trim and several months of hot combing the beajesus out of my hair, I was left w/hair shorter than when I started. I'm still recovering.

My second male stylist I found b/c a friend of mine had started going to this guy consistently and while I was suffering w/overly straight breaking hair (that was getting shorter!) her's seemed to be thriving. Well this clown turned out to be a crack user. I'm sooo not joking. Anyhoo, I learned this well after I suspended my visits. But during the few months I saw him he burned a healthy sized plug of hair out w/an iron. I was broken to 3".

I think poor stylists come in all genders and sexual preferences

In my opinion, many male hairstylists tend to have a true passion and natural talent for doing hair. Since it's considered unusual for a man to be interested in hair, they really have to be committed and willing to withstand the teasing they receive from pursuing a career as a hairdresser. Many have been interested in hair since they were children. Men also seem to be more supportive of long-haired clients and less scissor-happy.

I have had mostly good experiences with male hairdressers. The first hairdresser I remember going to on a regular basis, starting at when I was about six-years-old, was a man. I've been to about five other men since then and all were extremely talented and skilled.

I did have one bad experience with one who was far too complimentary and flirty during my second visit. When he called me at home later and asked for a date and I declined, he 'suggested' I find a new hairdresser. Of course I had no intention of going back to him after that anyway, but the whole experience was a little upsetting. He was extremely talented and had given me the best haircut in my life, up to that point. He also gave me my first cellophane rinse. Hopefully you won't have that type of experience, though. He was just a jerk.

The most generous stylist I've been to was a man and he gave me a haircut that was even better than the one I wrote about above. He was in an upscale salon and gave me well over $100 worth of services for $15! I'd asked him for just a cut on wet hair that I would wash myself at home beforehand because I was just out of college at the time and was short on money. But he insisted on washing my hair himself and following through to the end with a fabulous haircut, blow-dry and styling. He was extremely sexy and handsome to boot, so that made the whole experience extra enjoyable.

Another guy who was still a student also gave me a very wonderful, precise cut at a hair school. Guys seem to be very focused, detail-oriented, and agreeable in general, in my experience. I hope you find this to be true at your consultation.
