Is it better to use a nylon stocking? I'm just wondering why no one uses a strainer.

I use a stocking because it's easier to use tongs and squeeze the gel out. When I used a strainer I barely got any gel out.

I put a nylon strainer on top of a bowl and I simmer it with a tablespoon. It takes 1 minute: the key is straining it when the consistency is exactly like raw egg white/egg yolk, not liquid (too early) and not like a gelatin (too late). Usually it's when the seeds are foaming but they are still moving around without sinking. If the seeds don't move anymore, you can throw everything in the bin (lol).

The only time I used a stocking I had to wear gloves, blow on my hands, clean my entire house and then take a shower but I'm as goofy as they come.

I use nylons and chopsticks to squeeze it. Tried the stariner but I felt like I was gonna break it by applying so much pressure. The nylons work best for me and then I can just toss it in the garbage.

The nylon stocking worked best for me, just make sure you have plastic gloves and plastic tongs because my metal tongs broke through the nylon.

I've been wanting to try this flaxseed gel. How strong is the hold say compared to ECO styler or other store brands. My hair is starting to rebel so I need a stronger hold. TIA

^^ the hold is great. My avi is my first time using. It gives hold & moisture w/ no crunch. I love it. I use nylon to strain. Tried eco styler once but got crunch.

Is is sticky or anything like that? I love Hairveda's whipped gelly, but I think aloe gel in it makes my hair extremely frizzy and I wanted to try the flaxseed gel with added oils. With the winter months closing in, I was hoping flaxseed gel would be a good add-on to my daily usage for laying my hair down for phony ponies and buns. Does anyone have any insight regarding if the winter coldness may affect it's effectiveness? Thanks.

thanks hair4romheaven, your avatar looks really smooth and tamed. I like. I might give this a try this weekend. Also, if you ever revisit ECO styler gel try rubbing an oil over it it'll prevent or soften the crunchy effect. It's worked for me.

The hold is pretty equal to the ECO styler IMO.

It doesn't resemble aloe gel at all: it doesn't have humectant properties. In fact, your hairstyles are not affected by humidity with it (aloe gel and kccc work differently depending on the weather on my hair). It also works well with oils and butters because they easily get incorporated into it, simply by mixing or adding them when the gel is still hot, and this gel cuts or eliminates the greasy factor. while aloe can be sticky or create frizz in certain conditions, flax gel eliminates frizz and it lubricates your strands and keeps them separated.

Thanks ladies! I used the nylon before and it seemed liked I was wasting alot of gel. I will try a strainer and see which one I prefer.

How long is ideal to boil the water? I found 3 oz at walmart for .80 cents so I figured Id try it since my hair will be out and free in a few days

I made my first batch of flaxseed gel this weekend. I followed Naptural85's recipe.

I wasn't exactly sure when the gel was ready to be strained. But, just like she does, I used my spoon to scoop some of the "mucus" and touched it with my finger to see the consistency. It came out well.

So far, I have just used it on my edges. It has good hold there, and it leaves them so, so, SO soft. Seriously, they feel really great, and of course since it's not crunchy I can reset my style very easily. The gel also smells really good.

I used a cheapo stocking and plastic tongs. I think the tongs are a great way to get all of the gel out.
