Make your own relaxer?

What are the main ingredients? Do you mean make the base and the activator of the relaxer or just incorporate some stuff into the base of known relaxers?

I mean making one from scratch. I don't know all of the ingredients beyond sodium hydroxide for lye and calcium/guanidine hydroxide for no-lye. Seems like it should be fairly easy to make at home.

I wouldn't mind but where would you get these chemicals from?

I know sodium hydroxide is just lye and can be bought online at camden-grey.com, etc. The important thing would be important to get it to the right concentration for your hair.

OK, I don't know you. You may have a PhD in Chemistry or something. :bookworm: :brainy: If that is so, knock yourself out, you have my blessing. :)

Failing that, IMHO, one would have to be downright crazy insane  to mix up one's own relaxer and put it in your head. Doesn't this sound like a disaster in the making to anybody else???

Mixing up conditioner? Sure. You betcha. But something with LYE in it? That could leave you looking like Mr. Clean in a heartbeat? :nono: Not this sister.

I'm like joyousnerd. When I read the title I said out loud, "You gotta be kiddin' me." I would be deathly afraid of making one and putting it in my own head. I guess that's the ignorance of the procedure that makes me afraid. Somebody took the chance and tried... which is why we have such a booming market for it today.

Who says you can't?

When you find out how the test results go let us know....in the meantime I'll stick with affirm.

You have got to be sh**in' me :lachen:

I am afraid of relaxing my own hair. I can imagine making my own relaxer:eek: . I would be bald with some serious scar tissue:lol:  .

I think the best thing to do would be to find a good relaxer and add our own special ingredients like EVOO for moisture and protein. Stuff like that. After I think about it, it seems to diffucult to make your own relaxer.

it seems like it's so much more to it than just mixing a couple of ingredients together. That sounds really dangerous to do. I agree with chia canella, maybe just add some of your special ingredients to a pre-made home conditioner or something.

Ditto.........Hell to the no!

If you're adventurous go for it! I would follow the advice/warning of the OPs and just add ingredients to a commercial relaxer that you like. If you feel you must then make sure you do thorough research and maybe practice on a kinky haired mannequin, not your own head! If you mix up a batch then do it in a well ventillated space so you don't breathe in those crazy fumes. Good luck!

I'm a chemist and I wouldn't even try it!

Your best bet is to the leave the formulation to companies. With bases, if its too strong it will eat through your hair and scalp and you won't have any way to stop it.

Why do I see the image of Malcolm X (Denzel Washington) sticking his head in the toilet while he was having his hair conked. Folks made conkoline with white potatoes and lye, but that was before all these wonderful companies started making relaxer. I would not do it!

There are so many formulations to choose from.

   I don't mean to laugh but I am sure that it is a lot more complicated than it seems.

If you have a good background in chemistry then go for it. But if not then I would strongly suggest you leave it to the pros.

We are all here to help one another and we just don't want to see you do something that could potentially harm you or the health of your hair. We say "DON'T DO IT" out of love:)

A few days latter we don't want you to end up in the Hair Horror Story thread:lol:

That speaks volumes!!

There is no amount of money that would have me whip up a homemade batch of relaxer and spread it on my head.

I can see it now...WHOOSH!!! my head goes up in flames, me screaming and hollering. Naw, a sista ain't going out like that. :perplexed

Okay, first off thank you and BOOO! at all of y'all and your responses. *lol* Do you really think I would experiment on my own head at first?

That said, I bet it is not as difficult as folks think to make. I was just wondering if anyone had tried.

I say "go for it"...shoot, why not? I've heard of crazier things. Somebody had to be the first to make it so it can be done. Maybe add a little lye to a thick creamy conditioner and some castor oil or evoo...I think a lot of the ingredients in our store bought relaxers are preservatives and not necessary for actually relaxing hair. JMO.

Would you make your own neautralizing poo, too?

FYI off another website

recommend the professional lines used by certified professional stylists. Relaxer systems that I can recommend for use by your professional stylist are:

Mizani Relaxer System
Avlon Affirm Fiberguard
Sensitive by Nature
Gentle Treatment
Texture and Tones for Color-Treated Hair
SoftSheen-Carson (Optimum Professional MultiMineral Relaxer)

When the hair is relaxed 80 percent, not only is this healthier for the hair, but it also leaves a slight wave pattern so that you can wear your hair wavy or straight when heat is applied. Generally, if your hair is relaxed 100 percent you are overprocessing, creating lifeless hair.

Hey ladies,

Has anyone ever made their own relaxer? I doesn't seem like it would too hard.

so, I shouldn't relax my hair bone straight. Will I still be able to do roller sets if my hair isn't bone straight?
