In shambooies book she says you can put a lye relaxer over no lye ends. Has anyone ever done this an what where the results?? TIA

I did it on the 9th of last month and have no regrets. I havent had any shedding. My hair loves the results. I have also been using the Nexxus products he suggested. Hope you have good results too if you decide to try it.

I switched to lye and I will never go back. You can really tell the difference. Personally, it made mine thicker and more moisturized. I would definitely recommend it.

i have never experienced breakage from switching back and forth from no lye to lye relaxer. actually i haven't noticed a difference in my hair's moisture level either. My hair has never really been really dry from using either.

so the ladies who have used lye & no lye did you just apply it to new growth only or all of your hair?

when switching, i've only applied the LYE to my new growth. i've never gone back over the NO-LYE relaxed portions. I only use lye now.

I've had a stylist apply a lye relaxer over no-lye ends when I was permed. I didn't have any problem. However, I would NOT do it on my own. Whatever you do, be sure that you keep it moisturized.

When you rinse, the lye is going to run over the ends - I think that's sufficient. I wouldn't risk overprocessing. But I do believe that people need to stop with the No-Lye 'cause that stuff practically disintegrated my crown hair over time.

I'm so glad to see that someone posted this question! I had the same question too. I recently read the book and I also saw the part about the lye relaxer being put over the no-lye relaxed hair. I recently applied a lye relaxer to my new growth but I was afraid to apply it to the already relaxed no-lye hair. Wouldn't that be damaging to your hair? Why would I want to relax already relaxed hair? Will it add moisture to my ends? If so I will try it today and I will tell you what happened. How long is it suppose to stay on your prerelaxed no-lye hair? (maybe 5 mins or longer?) What do ya'll think? I'm a dare devil, I'll try anything once.

sugawooga aka daredevil,
this is one feat you may want to really reconsider. we don't want you to have any major mishaps, including excessive hair loss.

ITA with virtuasis, the run-off from the LYE perm is also sufficient for me.

Okay, I'm a bad girl...I tried a small(really small) portion of my hair with a lye relaxer on the end only and I don't feel a difference in my hair yet. Over time I will compare this small section with the rest of my hair to determine if this is good or bad for the hair. I'll try to stay on top of this by keeping ya'll posted about it. My end that I just relaxed with the lye does feel slightly softer than the rest. I'm not concerned with breakage in this little section so don't worry about me.

It doesn't seem like the "run-off" would be sufficient enough product or time to match the effects and changes in the hair texture. But I don't know; I'll be doing my first lye relaxer at the end of June.

you're right moez thunder,
i don't think the run-off matches the direct application of the lye over the no-lye, but it suffices for me. it also depends on your hair type and your trims.

but we won't have to wonder long because, dr. sugawooga, the chemist is doing an experiment as we speak.

we should have a report soon.

In the book it says that nothing will change a no lye reaxer. For example-if the no lye relaxer is underprocessed there is no way to correct it so supposed to moisturize the no lye ends.

I recently got a Phyoto relaxer, I previously had an Affirm Lye relaxer. I got my relaxer a week ago this past Thursday. My hair has body and is looking really good.. but... I washed and conditioned on Tuesday...it was okay... then..I did a conditioner wash last night and had A LOT of shedding. Shedding like I've never seen before. When I got the Phyoto they only did the new growth.

I don't know if what Shamboosie said is completely true. I was natural for a little bit and decided to relax my hair with a no-lye optimum perm. I got scared and washed it out too early so I still had hair that was loosly curled. When I finally went for a full fledged relaxer the beautician ran the lye relaxer throughout my hair for the last 5 or so minutes (I can't remember exactly) and it got it all completely straight...and it didn't fall out or break.

A couple years ago, my mom had put a no-lye relaxer in my hair and a few weeks later we went to this stylist to make an appointment for a wash and style. She took one look at my hair, made a face and she asked my mom "Did you put a no-lye relaxer in her hair?" My mom said "Yes...Why?" She then told my mom that no-lye relaxers are really bad for the hair and my hair was messed up. She mentioned something about the porosity being off. She then says that she needs to correct my hair by putting a lye relaxer over the entire length of my hair. I thought that was pretty dangerous. I never got the procedure done.

dr. sugawooga (mad scientist) is here,
Okay this is what I've discovered:
I noticed that the section of my hair that I applied the lye over the previously no lye is still softer than that of my no-lye hair. I did some back tracking and noticed that Shamboosie said that if you do this procedure it's like conditioning for your no-lye hair. (somehow I managed to miss this the first time I read it). My hair, in this small section, also looks shiner as well. I did not get any shedding (which is suppose to happen) maybe because it was such a small section. I am tempted to do my whole head but still reluctant. I kept the lye relaxer on for only 3 minutes (which Shamboosie says is long enough for this procedure). My ends also don't look as brittle as before.

Zuppy,
You must be really careful with the phyto relaxer. i used it for about 18 months and my hair was a real mess. Initially, my hair looked beautiful and grew but then dryness, breaking. underprocessed, shedding, etc. I eventually got a corrective relaxer 9design essentials, regular lye) which did correct some portions of my hair. However the beautician than decided one more corrective procedure was necessary to correct the problem and my hair was overprocessed and broke off big time. i basically transitioned for 19 months, grew some new hair and am now on my way. i suggest that you get a lye relaxer the next time and exercise great caution and care while growing your hair out. remember to deep condition and wear protective styles until the breakage stops. good luck!

Thanks girl! I think I am going to do this when I relax.

I am not sure if many people are aware of this but, after you relax your hair it is okay to have protein treatment. It will stop the chemical process and it will also save your hair from shredding or breaking. Also, you have to request to have a treatment otherwise you will just get a normal conditioner in your hair.

Well, I decided to apply the lye relaxer over my entire head two days ago. I am very happy with the results so far. I got minimal shedding and my hair is much stronger than before. Previous to the corrective relaxer I had a serious problem with breakage. My hair was very dry and brittle at the ends (from the inside out) but now my hair seems to not only be stronger but healthier looking as well. When doing this you must be careful not to over relax though. ONLY LET IT STAY ON YOUR HAIR FOR 3-4 MINUTES TOPS. This is adequate time to let the relaxer correct the damage caused by the no-lye relaxer. Any extra time would cause breakage. This procedure should only be done 1 time and no more. Also, when doing this procedure DO NOT COMB THE RELAXER THOUGH YOUR HAIR. This will only cause stretching your hair and future breakage. Let the relaxer do all the work for those 3-4 minutes then rinse your hair throughly with cold water, wash hair with your neutralizing shampoo (3x or how ever long it takes to get the relaxer out) then do a deep conditioning with your favorite deep conditioner. Shedding may occur but don't fret because it's normal.

Happy Hair!!!
Dr. Sugawooga
