Lye or No Lye

Even though none are really healthy, Lye is a healthier alternative for my hair. Plus it doesn't stink and can buy it in a 5lb tub

I've never questioned no-lye and lye relaxers before but I was reading a book called Beautiful Black Hair by Shamboosie and he believes that no-lye relaxers damage the hair horribly. I usually go with what's easy and cheap and that's a store bought relaxer (no-lye). I'm starting to think that this maybe why I have not been sucessful in growing hair past my shoulders.
Do lye relaxers have to be put in professionally? Is there anyone out there that put in their own lye relaxers and if so what type do you use and what technique do you use to put it in?

For those that use no-lye relaxers, do you have damaged hair. Are you happy with the no-lye and how do you keep your hair moisturized after the relaxer (on a daily basis)?

I've always been taught that no lye is worse for your hair then lye is. And from my expeirence, every member of my family who uses lye has fab hair and all those who use no lye

not so nice. I asked my stylist why this is and she told me that no-lye leaves your hair cuticles open, and causes calcification which leads to dry brittle hair that will snap over time. Or something like that

I am a 4a/b and I will only use lye relaxers..I do mine at home now but nolye relaxers are easy to find(any Walmart or Sally's) I have had more success w/lye than no lye...for example the Phytospefic relaxer is no lye and it worked well for my hair, but Texture and Tones(which contain lye) was a waste of money...but overall I have had better success w the lye based relaxers..

i went from no lye to lye b/c i heard lye was better. i didnt have any bad experiences with noy lye though.

I thought no lye relaxers were better for the hair because I compared the lye relaxers to draino, and back in the day it really burned my scalp and I almost lost my hair. When I found this forum, I learned about lye relaxers and gave them a try. I will never go back. My hair was not bone straight like it always got with the no lye, but it's sooo much healthier. I can't wait to cut off all my no lye relaxed hair , so I'll have a full head of lye relaxed hair.

I have been a no lye girl for years with no particular problem, But I am just remembering that I had used motions for a while last year and it was lye and I Hated it!!!, I guess it was not strong enough but I am planning on giving Mizani Lye relaxer a try for my next relaxer and I am praying that I like it because if I dont then it is back to No lye fr me

I've always used no-lye with great results. I don't think my hair is damaged. I don't plan to change because I feel if it isn't broken, why fix it?

Same here. And I apply my no-lye relaxer myself, haven't seen any split ends since last summer (which was also the last time I needed to trim my hair); but I've never been able to grow my 4a hair longer than just below my bra strap although I don't know if that's because of the relaxer that I use.

Lye, because my old scissor-happy-not-looking-out-for-me-stylist told me too. Lye works better for me than no-lye did. No-lye could NOT tame my hair because my hair was long and really thick.

I used to be strictly no lye until 4 years ago. My hair stayed dry, brittle, and breaking as long as I used no lye, and wouldnt shine no matter what. Cut off all my hair and switched to lye and my hair is doing 100% better.
