Anemia can cause hair loss/shedding, yes.

I am very anemic. I don't have any hair loss or shedding! My hemoglobin runs around 7-8 which is extremely low. I don't think that's true for everyone...and I got lots of hair! :)

one of my best friends had low iron and the doctor gave her iron pills to take and she said that having low iron made her hair come out. So take the iron pills prescribed by your doctor and your hair should definitely recover.. it did for my friend.

it was not that low a 10 i think and i have been taking the iron along with a multi and i also bought a shower aquafina(sp) shower fillter hoping this helps with the shedding

When my hemoglobin was a 10, yes my hair shedded alot until I upped my iron intake. A normal hemoglobin is a 14.

I too experienced lots of breakage and shedding years ago before my hair journey until I went to a doctor. He said I was anemic and put me on iron. The shedding stopped in just a couple of days!

Naptrl, if you are anemic, you may want to take iron and eat foods high in iron anyway. Your hair and body will thrive even more than it is now.

Make sure you drink plenty of water with those iron pills...
I know a lot of people don't eat this, but liver is a very good source of iron.

ugh liver i have not had that since my grany used to make me eat it LOL and i am also trying to up my water intake but i drink a propel every day but maybe just not enough

I'm anemic and I take iron supplements as well. My hair sheds really bad if I stop taking it, and stops shedding fairly quickly when I start taking it again. I found out the hard way, so now I take my iron cap. every day, even when I feel fine.

There is a brand called Slow Fe (I took this when I was pregnant), that you can get at Walmart, Walgreens, etc., that helps with constipation, is gentle on your stomach, etc. Here's what it looks like:

Eeeeeeeeeeeeew liver. :perplexed My doc said that too. I'm like I'm not going anywhere near any liver. Google iron rich foods...lotsa veggies and not so gross stuff as liver has a lot of iron.

I guess anemia affects people in different ways...cause I never had hair shedding from it either. I am extremely anemic too, naptrl, and have been for years, even to the point of needing blood transfusions. I get IV iron and have been for the past 6 years off and on. Last year was my longest round...I went weekly for almost the whole year. I just sit while the iron drains into my vein. My anemia is hereditary as well as due to heavy cycles. In my family, we don't digest iron...not from pills or food.

I just recently went to get my blood checked like last month and my doctor told me I don't have to take Iron pills anymore because my Iron level is now normal. I was 16 when I started taking them and now I'm 20. I took them on and off though...but the point is, if you're only slightly anemic you should recover by taking the pills or eating foods high in iron. I can't recall if I lost hair because of being anemic.

Yes. Iron deficiency can cause your hair to shed in addition to low energy and other health concerns. Take your iron supplements, young lady. Eat plenty of green, leafy vegetables such as spinach. :yep: Liver is high in iron too, if you can stomach, that. (I'm a mom. I can't help it.)

I'm anemic too. Like my mother I can't fully digest iron. I also can't take iron tabs or even multi's with iron because they make me double over with pain.

My deficency is not as bad as yours Lavendar but I've also at one time had to do the iron drip as thats the only way I could take it and not get seriously sick (what a pain in the butt that is!!!)

I didn't have any hair at the time so I can't recall if it was helpful in that respect:ohwell:

i have been taking the iron pills and a multi every day they have no effect on my stomach thank goodness i am going to try to eat better ...i only like spinach if it has cheese on it LOL

I've had anemia for sometime now and my hair doesn't come out at all. However, I do take a good iron supplement now that doesn't cause constipation or upset stomach...it's called Vitron C and it looks like this (along with some info)
Hope this helps. Oh, Vitamin C helps the iron to absorb better in the intestines. Also, take with Zinc...that helps the Vit. C. to absorb better too!

IA anemia does affect people differently. My mom is severely anemic and her hair has been growing like weeds and has thickened a lot since she began taking care of it. She takes iron shots now but even before that she never had hair loss or shedding.

I'm anemic, but my hair always floruished if I took care of it. Like others have said, different people get affected in different ways. Personally, I hated the iron pills. They did NOTHING, made me constipated and made my periods more heavy! But since you are in that low range, and don't seem to be affected by the pills, just take good care of yourself with proper eating habits (iron rich foods...even...l-l-liver) and you'll be A-ok! :)

I too, am slightly anemic, and it does affect my hair. I had to take the shots when I was pregnant eons ago! I was told, (by a friend, not a Dr :) ) that the B vitamins help you absorb iron more. I haven't been deferred from giving blood since I started being more concious of taking my b complex with the iron pills.

Isis, I really need to talk to you girl!! Your hair looks similar to mines (just a lot longer)..

Please tell me how you semi-relax your hair and how do you keep it from tangling??

What products do you use??

I hate applying heat to my hair as well!! And try to avoid it at all costs unless I have to get it done at a salon..

But I can tell by how your hair looks wet, that we have the same hair type!!
