I've just discovered braidouts.... They're great because they help me to avoid wet hair in the cold mornings. I need help with how to make them as unfrizzy as possible along with what to do when I take down the braids in the morning so they can blend into some kind of shape/style.

So far I've only used Beauty Without Cruelty's leave-in and nothing else. I'd rather not use anything that will make my hair shrink at all.... Can I apply a gel on the braid after it's braided or while I'm braiding?

My hair is at about 5 inches right now. I'm craving length/elongation.... I need some hope/growth right about now....

I'd appreciate any tips you can provide. Thank you.

Aveda antihumectant pomeade.

I am just speculating here but it is supposed to keep moisture out and prevent frizz.

I have some and I like it, it smells like coconut oil and I believe the main ingredient is castor oil. In a pinch you can probably use a mixture of coconut oil and castor oil:look:

I use Elasta Mango Butter and then I apply serum/gloss. I make sure that my ends are smooth before I tuck them under while wearing my silk scarf. Not sure how you feel about rollers, but you can always roll the ends making sure that they are moisturized and then take your braids/plaits a loose in the morning.

I love doing braidouts with IC sparkillettes gel. I got away from it for a couple of months and went back. It gives alot of definition. I moisturize first and used this on top. I dillute mine w/water to make a setting lotion when I need a thinner consistancy.

To show length with braidouts, I've always preferred braiding my hair after it has dried. I don't use extra product to make the braidout--the moisture in my hair and the leave-in I already used is enough. I seal in that moisture before drying with Aveda Anti-Humectanct as Trimbride described. If humid, I may also apply a little after my braidout is finished as well as a serum or something for shine.

I  braidouts! It's a style many if not most of us wore as little girls. :)

This is helping.... I have done the braids on dry or slighly damp hair and the length surprised me.... I would just like to reduce the frizz a bit.... so do I add the bit of gel before I braid, as I'm braiding, or after the braid is done?

Also, when I'm taking down the braids, how to do I blend the hair to get rid of the spaces/parts?

To blend the sections, I loosen them as I'm untwisting the twists. Then I slightly pick it with the end of a rattail comb. I just pick the roots and don't pull it all the way through to the ends. That way, the roots blend but you still have definition on the ends.

Also, to fight frizz, I dampen my fingers with a spray oil before I undo the twists. This seems to help keep my hands from drying out my hair.

Good luck!

I'm taking notes as well. I need all the braid-out tips I can get. I braid mine wet and it comes out frizzy and dry. I want more defined waves.

For my braid outs, I like to keep it pretty simple. I apply organics carrot oil liberally on wet hair and braid down. I then seal with wgo or olive oil especially on the ends. I do this the night before I'm going to wear a braid out. When I'm taking the braids out the next day I do like Robin41 and oil my fingers so that when I'm taking them down, it eliminates frizz and dry out. I style with my fingers and blend at the roots.
That's it! HTH :p

This post was really helpful... I know what to do next time. I just did my first braid-out ... I'm in frizzy city:perplexed .

are your twists dry all the way before you start taking them down?

I wear a twist/braid-out alot.

After I wash, I put in some Giovanni Direct Leave-In and Qhemet's Heavy Cream...then braid or twist and let them stay in and airdry for about a day and a half.

When my hair was shorter, I really liked smooth n' shine activator gel in the summer and Garnier Soft Curl cream (just a touch) in the winter. Both helped my twist-outs feel softer/moist for about 4 days or so and give good hold. I twist wet. I agree with the poster that said if you're going for length, you should twist dry.

Oh, regarding side Babyblue does 16 twists... I did this with my hair also and got compliments.

I am a relaxed 4a/4b. When my hair is wet, I braid it in 4-6 large braids. I make sure that I use detangler (Pantene or Dove) and that I am very gentle with my hair. I only do braid outs when it it close to the time to get a touch up. I then put leave in conditioner on my ends and seal with a serum. Then, I cover my head with a bonnet or scarf. Wake up next morning, my hair is still slightly damp. Un braid and comb with fingers. As my hair drys, it does get bigger in size. So, I wear a head band to tame down the front.

I did a braid out this week on dry hair three braids one in the back and one on each side. I took it down and applied Smooth and shine serum it was beautiful.
