Ok, so Im having a discussion with a lady about hair, and she says to me that if I was my hair every week Im gonna wash my relaxer out , Im like are you kidding me, you cannot was a relaxer out, you get new growth because your hair is growing.. she was like stop playin

ANother common myth is about your relaxer lasting long. Now correct me if Im wrong, BUT, if you dont get new growth within a month there is probably a problem. Like this lady said, when she gets an Optimum, her relaxer lasts longer than if she gets an affirm ...

That cant be right...

are there things that people believe about hair care that just blow you away?

Yeah like they say black people can't wash their hair everday like white people.
yeah i get that all the time. when i tell people i wash my hair everyday, they look at me and say "you're not white" and i just laugh at their ignorance

GREAT THREAD!
I would like to add the myth that you MUST get you relaxer touched up every 4-6 weeks or your hair will break off! God forbid you waited until 6 weeks, your hairdresser would be like :nono: :spank: :nono: :spank:!

I was told for years that my hair would fall out if I didn't retouch within 6 weeks. I went 8 weeks once and this hairdresser almost had a heart attack, giving me all these special treatments and stuff (and charging me for it). I really believed this thinking I'd mess up my hair for life.
And now its almost been 2 years since my last touch-up, and last time I checked my hair didn't all fall out.
I wish I had known back then, I woulda only been relaxing a few times a year.

My cousins used to tell me that dirt makes your hair grow. Their kids all had long 3b and they wouldn't comb/brush/wash their hair for like 2-3 weeks at a time sometimes. When you took the ponytails out, the dirt had gathered where the hair bow was, so it was like you never removed it! Gross!

I could probably write 2-3 books filled with all the lies hair dressers and others have told me about haircare. Of course as mentioned earlier, the whole relax your hair every 4-6 weeks thing was the biggest lie. Others included infrequent washing (every 2 weeks); water is BAD for your hair (we can all laugh at this one now). You MUST GREASE your hair, or it will fall out (not oil, GREASE). If you want your hair to grow you have to trim at least 1-2 inches off, or it will break! I had a hairdresser press my roots after putting a super strength relaxer on my hair  ! She said that this would help keep my hair straight. I wonder now what curl could have been in my hair after using super strength. Ironically, I just got my hair relaxed on Saturday, and amazingly the hairdresser used Affirm mild with lye. I have to say ever since using Affirm mild lye, my hair has been in better condition than ever. I think I'll stop there, I'm getting annoyed just thinking about it!

not combing your hair EVERYDAY will make it dread (proper locks) dont give me no jooooke! once every few days is fine! just depends on the style.

Clip your ends and your hair will grow faster.- hair grows from the roots not the ends people.

Dirt makes the hair grow-maybe the lack of manipulation helps retain length? But thats just nasty!

Black people's hair is weaker than white people- Pure trash, IMO hair is hair. It is composed of the same things just different, shapes and colors.

I've heard that washing too much would dry my hair out.

WRONG! Actually is does just the opposite for me.

i have heard our hair, the 4a/b kind is more fragile. i think what they mean is our hair cannot withstand stress from heat as well as other races hair can. I so dont agree with that b/c I've seen some other races with split/damaged ends. Also most combs/brushes and products are geared towards type 1-3 hair which are dont work for us.

i'm probabley the exception but ifind dusting DOES make my hair grow faster lmao..might think i'm crazy but the hair always seems to grow back quicker and better. only lil dusts

I hate to sound like the voice of dissent here, but I have actually had this experience with Optimum as well. I don't know why that is, but it took my hair a few touch-ups with a lye relaxer to get out of that phase.

But I agree with everything else ;)

That's an interesting way to think of it. But I think the only degree that our hair is "weaker" (which is not a term I normally use just for the purpose of this) is because our hair is more prone to becoming dry and that's only because of our curl pattern. I think the more coilier/curlier the hair is the more it is prone to being more dry.

I do think it is more fragile simply because, in its natural state it is curly/coily and more prone to snap and break because of that curl pattern. Also because of the curl, the oil does not go down the hair shaft as easy and so our hair can be dry.

I also think this is true, except I think hair that is really coily is much more fragile when it's straightened.

i'm not sure. i know my hair is stronger when straightened but in the long run i retain my ends and moisture more with airdrying and elaving hair wavy

I've also heard that if u wash your hair 2 much it will get rotten:lachen: (it aint eggs) lol
Wearin a scarf 2 much will suffocate your scalp:lol: :lachen:

I find that to be have true for my hair . It is stronger when straightened and it is SO hard for me to retain moisture when not straightened. I have to moisturize twice a day, when i air dry, versus me only having to moisturize every other day on my straightened hair. Which drives me to question myself "why am I doing this again?" :look:

I've heard this as well, but this one miserably fails the science and logic test. A relaxer "lasting longer" doesn't seem to me like it would be a good thing anyway. Doesn't that mean your hair isn't growing? No way its gonna come out of your scalp naturally chemically relaxed a few weeks after the relaxer. If I'm not seeing kink by week 3, I'm starting to panic.

and ITA on the dusting/trimming not equaling faster growth. It is just not meshing with science and reason here. If you subtract something from something else--- mathematically you'll end up with less. Each and every time. I've never seen subtraction land anyone on the plus side of things

My mother said "some people just don't grow hair." I ask, who do you know that got a relaxer and never needed another one 'cause it didn't grow out? She was like, "hmmph, never thought of it that way." I said, it's growing it's just breaking off as fast or faster.

I can't say that my hair grows faster or slower with a certain type of relaxer but I KNOW from having watched my hair very closely over the last year that IT DOES GROW SLOWER THE FIRST 2 to 3 WEEKS after a relaxer. I can go almost 3 weeks after a retouch with almost no visible new growth and then BAM, here it comes. You know...I'll take photos cause ya'll gonna think I'm trippin.

Using shampoo's and conditioners made for white people will only harm my hair, or will have no affect. (In fact, its been the better to my hair than most black haircare products)

Leaving a conditioner in my head for longer than 20min can make my hair fall out, by making the root of my hair to soft.

Whatever color I put into my hair I need to reapply it each month to keep my hair from becoming to dry

Letting my hair air dry will cause breakage

Relaxed hair doesnt need protein:cool:

I went on a moisture rampage and my hair was mushy for days and started breaking all over the place!

Parting your hair and scratching it with a fine tooth comb will make it grow. I can't count how many times i've seen girls doing this in school. "Girl scratch my scalp!"
