Is a leave-in an absolute necessity in every relaxed regimen?

I don't think my hair performs well putting products in my hair after washing when wearing my hair straight. Oils make my hair look stringy. Leave-ins make it look dull. Serums make having body IMPOSSIBLE. Don't get me wrong. When I'm stretching, my CHI Leave-in Mask is my staple.

Does anybody think having a leave-in is absolutely necessary?

For someone who flat irons on 250 degrees, is a heat protectant necessary?

My hair looks and feels best on freshly conditioned hair with no products. I wash often- maybe 4-5x weekly.

I'm in PJ Reform School and I refuse to waste money trying everything under the sun.

Do you have fine hair?

I don't use leave in all of the time and I really can't tell the difference between when I do and don't. I get the bounciest styles using less leave in product. I just get my conditioning in when I deep condition. I pretty much use One N Only Argan Oil on my damp hair and/or heat protectant spray and continue styling.

I noticed that my stylist never uses a leave in conditioner and my hair is always banging. What he does use is a serum and Wonder 8 Oil Mist to prevent reversion because I'm texlaxed. That's what you see in my siggy from my July relaxer.

I say you're either not using the right product or using too much of the product.

As for my hair, I feel that "something" is necessary regardless if I'm air drying, rollersetting or flat ironing but that doesn't necessarily mean it's necessary for yours. All heads differ. You have to find what works for you or you'll be bald trying to hang with everyone else. I learned that quickly when attempting to fit into the norm. <---ETA: I learned that the hard way. Perhaps your hair is not the norm so go with works best. But, having said that, I would never consider using direct heat without a protectant of some kind.

i think you might be using too much. i am fine hair/ relaxed and i use a creamy leave-in, but i use about a pea size amount. that's it.

Are you referring to using leave-ins only with regards to flat ironing? If so, I was just reading up on that and found these links that show how to infuse moisture in your hair before flat ironing so you don't have to use any leave-ins. It's info from Patouchli85. This video and this video go together. And this thread by westNDNbeauty.

When flat ironing I do not use leave in. I have fine BKTed natural hair. My routine for flat ironing is as follows:
Lightly Oil and finger detangle
Clarifying Poo
Moisture Conditioner
Detangle
Rinse Completely
Apply Nioxin Thermal Bliss *** Bomb.com:) extremely light
Blowdry
Flat iron

You don't have to use a leave-in if it isn't working for you. Also, remember with creamy leave-ins you have to use a small amount or you'll get hard hair.

I don't use a traditional leave in and the products vary based on what I am doing but at the very least I use AVJ and grapeseed oil. Naked hair is dry hair for me.

Errrr, I guess you don't necessary need to add a leave in your hair.

But if you ask I would of said yes. That answer is only out of habit, though. When I was relaxed I added every thing under the sun in my hair...no prob at all.

Even My stylists always added a leave in and a serum before flat ironing my hair.

I have had this issue as well.

Some leave-ins are too thick, some weight my hair down, some just dont cut it.

It helps to use a leave-in with a more watery consistency than a cream or lotion leave in.

Also, I try not to be so heavy handed with the application.

IA. Wat kind of leave in are you using a creamy based or a watery/spray kind? Some good ones to try that are light are Lacio Lacio (creamy but very light), It's a 10 Leave in (spray creamy kind), Aphogee Leave in (spray) and Rolland Una Dual Phase treatment (spray).

After 5 weeks of research, I've come to the conclusion that I'm using 5x more product that I should :ohwell: I like the creamy leave-ins and I looked at some videos to realize this. Currently, I'm using Silicon Mix Leave-in and I love it...in moderation  Thanks!

Try using a spray leave-in since it's lighter than a creamier one. You don't need much.
