I decided to do whatever the hell I want with my hair!!!

Ive been bunning for almost 3 years. And while I have seen progress I'm just sick of it. Yes I know that trimming my hair every month has kept it at this length forever. But it's like a compulsion or something w/ me. While I'm trying to keep scissors away from my head this year, I'm still not happy with it.

I see girls with their hair down and they look so good, but I never wear mine out because I'm afraid of damage.

So yesterday when I took my hair down and noticed 20 broken hairs on the sink, (yes i count  ) Here I was thinking I was down to almost none. I looked at the floor, and apparently thats where all the breakage has been hiding. So I said f### it!!! If it's going to break it's going to break so I might as well do what I want with it. I deep condition, avoid heat and it's still breaking!!

I've decided to wash and either crimp or straighten with a curling iron once a week. I'm crimped today and have received 3 compliments thus far.

If it grows anymore good. If not then oh well. I have pretty thick hair about 2in from armpit. Nice length I guess.

So my hair journey is offically over. I'm going to start enjoying my hair. And who knows, I'm digging Posh spices hair cut. Maybe for the summer???

My friend said EVERYONE'S hair breaks. And that'll I still see growth despite styling it. We shall see...

I support your decision but please take some of the knowledge on here with you such as not overdoing it with blowdryers and curling irons and always using a heat protector with them and try not to overlap relaxers and don't forget to keep your ends moisturized. You'll be alright, live long and prosper:p

I have BEEN where you are now. I understand where you are coming from. I am still taking care of my hair but I no longer follow a strict routine and I am not concered with growth. I have been focusing on hair health and thickness. In your case, I believe that length will follow in time. Sometimes we do "too" much to our hair thinking that it's the right thing when in fact it could be the cause of breakage. I also believe you can have healthy hair without bunning and baggying etc. My sister is living proof. She also uses heat once per week with no problem. In the end, you have to do what makes "YOU" happy and whatever decision you make and are comfortable with is the right one! Also, just one more thing, as far as breakage, you may want to try to balance your protein and moisture. Hope everything works out. Good luck!

Thank you :)

I'm just fustrated because I do everything right!!! Mositurize, protein treatments monthly, blah, blah, blah. And still breakage! Its so irratating. I could see if I was lazy and didn't take care of it. Or if I hadn't been on this board for going on 4 years and didn't know anything. But at this point all the work seems futile to me. I feel like I'm in a losing battle.

I even adopted a really simple regime with only 3 products!!! Nope, still breaking.

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna try. Hopefully it will work for me too. Maybe it's airdrying that's causing my breakage???

Could very well be. It works fine for me but my sister cannot air dry. Her hair was breaking so bad. Now that she blow drys (with heat protectant) her hair is fine.

I'm feeling exactly the same way now. I like my length but it isn't what I have been shooting for. Good luck with whatever you chose.

I feel you girl.... I like to wear my hair down as well. After bunning & baggin I caused more damage than just wearing it out :ohwell:
As long as you keep the ends moisturized, deep condition with the right products, limit your heat, use a satin cover at night I think you will be fine. HTH

And airdrying for me is a big NO!! Rollerset work like a charm!

I think I'm going to follow dlews is regiment of wearing it our three days outta the way and doing roller setting and keeping it heavly mosturied

Good Luck and don't forget ALL the knowledge that you have gained. You should be fine;)

I agree, we only live once ( that we know of anyway) so enjoy it. I think air drying is my culprit too but I found out a secret. If you let it stay wet apply your leave ins and tie it down with a scarf or bonnet before you go to bed. It will be dry in the morning or 80% and you have ( I mean I have) little to no breakage at all.

yep cause honesty im only going to wear it out during school (colllege student) and other then that it well be pin up in a bagged bun. this is why i want eaither brastrap or midback because i also want to be able to still wear weaves :D and get it kornrowed up also

Don't feel bad girl. I just realized that my hair doesn't like being hidden either. I get more breakage that way. Do what makes you happy

Have you considered switching from a no-lye relaxer to a lye relaxer? That may be part of your problem.

Regardless, I agree with the ladies that you should stay on a healthy hair regimen regardless of how often you bun, etc. There is a healthier way to do heat weekly so I would do a search or PM some of the ladies who do heat & wear their hair down often. Sylver wears her hair down EVERY day, and her hair is long and beautiful so it can definitely be done.

Good luck!

:ohwell: but didn't she have long hair when she was younger? and whats her hair texture?

What difference does that make? This board is proof that having longer hair as a child/adolescent is NOT indicative of potential lengths as an adult. There are plenty of BSL and longer ladies on this board who have never had long hair.

She's a 4 something if I'm not mistaken.

No.. wiat a second slow down slow down I wasn't trying to say because she had a cetain TYPE of hair that she can wear it out i was simply asking a question...I know you can grow your hair out regardless of WHAT type of hair you have. I was simply asking because ITS EASIER to wear CETAIN types of hair out without alot of breakage...

and on top of that somtimes you hair can be a type 4b and act like a type 1a hair (using as an example) crazy as that seems I've seen it..

I wear my hair baggied 24/7 with no breakage but I think at a certain point once your hair reach a certain length. You should enjoy it some. I mean wear protective styles but a couple days out of the week, one should wear there hair down. I'm going to eventually learn to do rollersets because that is going to be my alternative to using heat:)

You said:"but didn't she have long hair when she was younger?"

as if to suggest that because she had long(er) hair as a child, she'd have long hair as an adult. What I said had nothing to do with the TYPE of hair she has...I was making a point about LENGTH.

I said:"This board is proof that having longer hair as a child/adolescent is NOT indicative of potential lengths as an adult. There are plenty of BSL and longer ladies on this board who have never had long hair."

I wasn't implying that you said anything regarding texture. I was just stating that the fact that she may have had long hair as a child does not mean that she will or will not have long hair as an adult.

See it?

Aww you sound like me. I feel like that too, I even set up a quit date.:look: I can't take this ish no longer. Now that I cut my hair, I now have to set BACK my quit date which I hate. Oh well.

Some things that I learned from here will stay with me forever though. Such as moisture and protein and whatever. I am glad you are enjoying your hair and I would love to be past the 'grow it out' stage, but I will get there one day. Patience is key. Anyways don't forget where you came from.;)

Agreed.

Your fine haha, I quickly read it and quickly replied without much thought on wording it so it made sense to other people.

I don't know if Sylver had long hair when she was younger. But what I do know is that where she is now she didn't start with long hair. She started with a Halle Berry pixie cut and went from there. She is also a 4a.

But yeah, I understood your question. And sometimes I feel like long hair while younger is a huge advantage.

Gotcha. ;)

OP: what if you compromised and made sure to pin/baggy your hair as soon as you got home and/or on days when you'd be in most of the day? Or what if you committed to deep conditioning religously and moistuirizing daily if you're wearing it down?

I evade that guilty feeling by making deals with myself...like, if I'm going to wear my hair down the next day, I'm sure to moisturize it well the night before. And that evening after, I pin it up as soon as I walk in the door and I moisturize the ends before bed. This way, I'm not stressing about damge because I'm protecting it and babying it each chance I get.

Just a thought...

Thank you! :) I didn't mean come off and rude or anything...
I was just trying to say that regardless of length or if her hair was younger or older I was just trying say that 4b hair can still act like its a 1a hair.. ya know? :)

Ya, you'll have to excuse how I sounded my little brain was thinking and I didn't take the time to word it right :)

But thats what I plan on doing when i reach my goals because I know Ill keep it pined up or stuff and only wear it during school days. Thats why it i wanted waist length but i want to be able to wear weave so I want to keep it LONG but short enough that i can weave it up to give it a break :)

3 years! Wow, I quit after about 8 months. My hair is braided now, but I wear it down EVERYDAY it is not braided. I still try to avoid heat, but ultimately don't care if it stays this length forever (which I seriously doubt will be the case). I'm not going back to buns.
