I'm transitioning and although I'm getting used to my new hair, I still have bad days. I feel like my hair is controlling me instead of the other way around. I have started to refer to my hair as if it were a person and I started calling it by name before I could stop myself  .

Its/her name is Mama Afrika (I like it with the k, it gives her personality). I feel crazy for admitting this, but I was hoping there was someone else who has the same habit.

You are not alone. I remember when I was transisitioning, i felt the same way at times....my natural sections would always wave/curl upwards and I couldn't stand it at times. I had to literally put alot Fantasia IC gel on my hair, just to hold it down...and it worked, but I had alot of buildup afterwards, so I had to clarify alot.

Hello

My name is Jafro - i belong to Bublin.

The day she stopped straightening me with that white stuff was a God send. I started to grow out of a healthy scalp but what a shock - she went and shaved me off - literally to within an inch of my life - what a shocker....nope, she couldn't transition me - oh no - she has no patience whatsoever.

But a year down the line I now have a beautiful texture but am very thick and my front end won't grow like the back which means Bublin is having a hard time putting me into a ponytail - i find it really funny  , watching her get frustrated with me.
I don't mean it, i just choose to grow unevenly - its my prerogative. Besides i have decided not to give her loads of split ends and she has great curls.
I am a bit dry but that's because she doesn't moisturise me often enough. Maybe if she did my front end would grow - hint hint.
She's also abit boring - i mean - enough already of the wash n go's. Give me some style baby!
I shouldn't speak badly of her - really - i mean, she does pay me alot of attention - she's always doing co-washes and giving my hair lots of different products - everyday is like Christmas - i never know what present she'll give me next.

Hi ladies, Yeh - Jafro better start getting its act together or it will be shaved off again - ha ha ha ha (evil laugh)

Khalia - Mama Afrika and Jafro must have been talking cus they are both misbehaving.

OMG i think we have mental health problems. :ill:

On a serious note, yes i totally understand. For me becoming natural was very liberating and only having 1 inch of hair was both a novelty and very easy to handle. Now with 6 inches of hair the novelty is wearing off and i feel as though i have an awkward length of hair. I just don't know what to do with it. All my life i would fling it into a ponytail and not worry about styles - now i find myself locked in this daily battle to make sure i don't go out the house looking like Don King.
However i'm sure this stage won't last too long for us.

Bublin... Jafro is too funny!

my hair has no name, but we've been thru our struggles too. i had to learn as a permie that my hair was gonna do what it was gonna do, so i had to learn to get on board with it! i was always trying to get my relaxed hair thinner and straighter... so i was over-processing it and applying way too much heat on a daily basis. finally i figured out my hair was unruly, frizzy and prone to split ends because i was frying it to within an inch of its life! i started taking a little better care of it, but it wasn't until i decided to start transitioning that i learned the most important lesson about my hair - to not care what it looks like.

i know you're like  but let me explain...

it's not that i intend to leave the house looking like a hot mess. i'm just saying that once i stopped worrying so much about what my hair looked like, i could embrace it more. it didn't have to look perfect with every hair in place. once i got to that point, i realized i didn't care about how i looked with or without hair and i BCd with just 2 inches of hair on my head. and when i was going thru my growing out phase, i didn't care if it looked a little funky. i knew that it would soon pass.

i still don't really fuss over my hair now. i wash and go. if it looks a little too frizzy one day, i pull it back into a puff. i have papers to write, homework to finish, grant and scholarship applications to turn in, jobs to apply to, a 14-month-old to chase and take care of, and God knows how many other little stressors that pop up every day. not having to worry about my hair makes it a tad easier. :D

***again i will reiterate - don't you walk around looking busted and then blame it on me saying i told you to have your hair looking like a bird's nest...

:) We need a little humor now and then. Doing this hair thing can sometimes be all-consuming. It's good to "lighten up".
