Last time I blowdried my hair I had some serious chunky knots close to my scalp. I'm convinced that I get them because of the way I shampoo. I normally just put my fingers in my hair and massage my scalp with the shampoo, leaving the length of my hair alone.
Any ideas???

that would generally describe how I wash my hair. I think if u were to roller set the hair (there is a good thread on how to do this)you can take care of the most of the kink at the root. It also depends on how long post relaxer you are.

I always wash my hair in sections. i make 4 sections and then i apply a small amount of shampoo to each sections. rub through then rince. I then do the same with conditoners. It makes it easyer to detangle and i get less breakage during and after a wash. I like to blow dry my hair with a little shea butter,to keep it soft and easy to manage.

I do the same thing BUT i don't massage it to the point where my hair is lifting upwards and twirling. I usually shampoo my whole head tho. Also, i make sure that my hair is fully detangled B4 i get into the shower... and than i comb thru it while rinsing the shampoo out under the water.

I bend over the tub. Before I wash I comb my hair so it is tangle free. I just started doing this recently and it really works a LOT better. Then I shampoo like I always do, my whole head. I try not to tanlge my hair while I shampoo it.

Also while i rince out the shampoo ( or conditoner) form my hair. i take the time to gently comb throught each section to keep it free of knots. I first do it with my fingers then with a wide tooth seamless comb. i also like to use detanging conditioner like Nexxus Ensure or L'anza Detangler they really make combing wet hair a easier. i still keep the 4 sections separated though out the whole wash. and when i dry my hair (air dry or blow dry) i leave it in the sections.

I got this tip from Allandra:

Put some shampoo in a bottle with an applicator tip and apply it only to your scalp. I tweaked it a little.

I add equal amounts of shampoo and distilled water. I apply it to my dry scalp (the distilled water makes it lather), scrub my scalp while disturbing the length of my hair as little as possible. When my scalp is clean, I "squeegee" the shampoo through the length of my hair.

I love this tip. I got it from Kenesha (thanks girl). Works like a charm.

I used to wash my hair in 6 sections but now I only do it in two sections. I too, used to get really BIG knots I mean HUGE to where I would have to just cut the whole section off. What I believe has helped me is washing my hair everyday, washing it in the shower, and combing after washing everyday. I used to bend over the tub and wash my hair, wash it three times a week, and only comb it once a week with a regular-tooth comb in sections (like 5 sections on each side), sometimes once every other week. Finger combing wasn't working for me and the wide tooth combs seemed to be the problem as well. So now I have an effortless combout and my last relaxer was August 7th. I used to only try new products after a fresh relaxer but now I can try them anytime. HTH!

I part my hair down the middle and shampoo each side separately. I put shampoo in my hand and rub it together then apply it to my hair concentrating on my scalp. I massage very gently and then rinse. Sometimes I finger comb.

Recently, I've started applying a light conditione (like V05) and detangle my hair under the showerhead BEFORE I shampoo. This helps cut down on tangles. I seem to lose more hair if I try to detangle with my hair dry.
