Ok ladies, for a couple of months now, my hair 'dreads' up from the roots. when I try to take apart the mess, in the middle is a knot that I have to then work down my hair shaft to get out.

Why do I get these and how do I stop it??

Sorry my pics are bad but its hard to hold a camera and my hair steady at the same time. Short hair problems I guess.

Ok, we need more info to try and pin point this. What is your abbreviated regimen (include products).

u get that. its when i dont detangle thoroughly enough. I used wide tooth combs and fingers for a long time and found my roots would dred up. I switched to using a denman brush and really brushing from root to tip, that helped. Along with controlling my shedding because i shed like a beast

Ok so Its kind of normal. Where can I find a Denman brush because Im tired of getting these knots.

Royalq what technique do you use for your denman brush? I am scared to use mine because of horror stories of type4 hair getting stripped out by denman and also people getting mid shaft splits.
I want it to get thorough detangling, presently I use my fingers.

@LexiDior, I have the same issues. It normally happens as a result of improper detangling -- the sheds collect at the base of the scalp and dread up. The only way I can somewhat prevent this is to lightly comb daily or finger comb which I kind ofsuck at. This dreads also form if I don't properly detangle pre-wash. The denman is sold at Sally's but it's not a good tool for my hair.

I had to learn to thoroughly detangle the hard way as well. I stop using the denman brush and started using the sageman smoothing method with the two combs. Then sometimes I used their oval brush around the roots. This was the closet thing to the "gentleness" of finger combing. I had very little shedding or breakage but almost no knots.

The magic star comb (which is on back order) and the lady magic star comb.
I don't normally suggest commercial products but these are an investment that will last a long time. Check the reviews when you get a chance...

I got a denman from Sally's & modified it by removing every other row of teeth from it. It just works out better for my hair. They have posts/vids on youtube if you needed.

yep thats what i do to. I first run my hair under water because the denman is not suitable for major knots. Then with a slippery conditioner i start at the ends and work my way up, all the way to my scalp. i give my scalp a good pass to make sure there are no missed spots
