Just DC it anyway?

Hi ladies! First thread after finally subscribing and I have a hair question.

When I started my hhj late last year, my hair STAYED really dry. It was so bad that I had to do both DCing and hot oil treatments weekly for months before my hair stopped looking like a bird's nest. My question is, do I still need to do special treatments even my when hair is moisturised and healthy? OR are special treatments just supposed to be done as needed? Thanks for your time.

I think that DCing and pre-pooing with hot oils are great as a part of your normal routine. They help to prevent excess dryness in addition to remedying it. The only special treatments that I do as needed are protein treatments.

Oh, and welcome! :)

I DC once a week/Tea rinse once a week...I think that is normal for most people (although some do it less frequently than that). All in all, it depends on you and your hair...but from reading on the forums it seems like DCing more often than not helps to combat any issues.

Once your hair is moisturized and healthy, you gotta work to keep it that way...just like our bodies. If we eat healthy for months then decide to eat a bunch of junk food and every once in awhile eat healthy...thats when we start deteriorating, and having issues. Same for hair, do what you need to do to get it where you need it, but it needs to be maintained on a regular basis (ie regimen). Keep up what your doing :D, just adjust and do as you notice it being needed.

I would say that special treatments need to continue to be a part of your regular regimen but they don't need to be calculated like "Every Tuesday you should DC your hair." It all just depends on what your hair needs that week.

I DC 1-2 times per week depending on what I put my hair through that week. Some times there are two light DCs (just doing a quick 10 minute one in the shower) or sometimes it's one more intense one (30 minutes under dryer, air dry for 1 hour or overnight) plus one light one. Sometimes the DCs are just 2 days apart sometimes they're around 7 days a part. If I'm using more protein one week or I do one strong protein treatment then that also influences my DCing as well.

I understand that using products so often definitely takes a toll on all of our wallets (and time). You may not have to DC religiously every single week but I would not neglect it to the point where you KNOW you need one but are just opting out. When you start getting really heavy handed on the moisturizer because your hair seems to not be holding it well anymore then it's probably a sign that you need a good DC.
