I know it's not healthy for you but I've been hearing that junk food could have a negative effect on your hair. I know diet does play a role in hair growth but I never thought junk food could prevent your hair from growing. I remember one time my hairdresser told me that if I stop eating all that McDonalds my hair would grow. Has eating junk food somehow affected your hair?

I have no idea how true that is. But I don't see how eating it would stop your growth. But perhaps eating too much would not be such a good idea, seeing that what you put inside ur body effects ur outward apperance. I've always thought that your hair always grew regardless, but of course I could be wrong. There have been people on here who have grown their hair (some inches in a short period of time) and weren't taking any type of supplements or exercising or eating healthy, but it was how they handled their hair that made a difference. But I don't know. ::shrugs shoulders::

I agree with Millah. Hair will grow regardless of how healthy or unhealthly your diet is. Proper hair care is what really matters when it comes to hair growth IMO.

hair wont grow at its maximum with an unhealthy body. junk food stays in you and inhibits the maximum funtionability the the human body, preventing optimum growth, thickness, shine, etc.

Let's face it, everything that goes into our mouths either helps or hinders our health & hair. For every piece of junk food we eat, theres a little less space for something healthy.

This post made me got to the Internet and search “Junk food and hair.” This is an exerpt from an article that I just read…

…Diet is very important for hair growth. Without the B vitamins and sufficient iron, zinc and protein, hair growth may be less than ideal. If you have suffered from an eating disorder or frequently follow strict diets, or eat junk food regularly, bear in mind that this will affect your hair growth. If you are on antacids, they may adversely affect your ability to digest protein. There are several good multi-nutrients in health stores that provide those nutrients specifically needed for good hair production, so check them out – and improve your eating habits! Remember that it takes about three to four months for changes to take place in the appearance of your hair, as the new hairs have to grow long enough to make a difference.

Thanks for the thread... makes me not want to eat junk food as much. Fruits and veggies are delish :lick:

Someone posted a thread on this a few months ago. She was eating healthier because she was on a diet and her hair grew faster and healthier, she noticed.

what you eat does affect your hair health. i don't know about hair growth, but if you aren't healthy, it won't be healthy. and i want healthy hair above anything else.

i know when i eat properly and drink lots of water my hair, skin, and nails look so much better.

I have to agree with those in the thread who think that a diet of junk food does not necessarily negatively impact hair's growth or overall appearance. I am sure there must be people who may be affected by it, though, but you may not be one of them.

I think of it like this -- there are some people for whom bananas, shrimp or some other type of food may be life threatening, because they have an allergy to that particular food. But the majority of us do not have to worry about dying from eating bananas or shrimp. The same may be true for some people when it comes to junk food and their hair's growth rate and overall health.

Unfortunately, I grew up eating a terrible amount of junk food and drinking almost nothing but soda and other sugar-laden beverages. Then when I reached puberty and became curvy and also gained weight as a result of my unhealthy diet, my aunt (who is very nasty towards everyone) started to harass me terribly about it. I became depressed and began to skip breakfast and lunch because I mistakenly (subconsciously) thought that eating less frequently was going to help me lose weight. It didn't -- I just gained more due to the whole 'long periods of not eating just makes you gain more weight when you finally do eat' phenomenon, which I was not aware of at that time.

Clearly, none of that was good for my body but, through it all, my hair always remained thick, shiny and waistlength -- except for the times I got it cut into a style, of course. Anytime I cut several inches off, they'd grow back before I knew it.

I'm sure if some scientists had taken a strand of my hair back then and done an analysis of it, they would have been able to tell that I did not have a healthy diet. But that is not something that was reflected in the appearance and growth of my hair

By the way, I'm happy to say that I have a much healthier diet and weight today. :) And of course I believe that is best for anyone, regardless of whether it affects their hair or not.

I would be bald if my diet really affected my hair. I am a junk food addict. I can go for days without eating as long as I have some chips and dip or slim jims.
