Jumpin on Henna bandwagon...questions for the experts

After all the rave reviews about the benefits of henna, I have decided to try it. I bought a box of it 2 months ago and was kinda intimidated and discouraged when I read the directions. My questions are:

1. Is the mixing and application process as difficult as it sounds?
2. Is it harder for naturals to use it?
3. How long does it take to see results?
4. How often do you have to apply it?
5. what’s the best brand

Thanks for your help, I’m really trying to add something to my regimen that will help my hair become or at least look thicker and healthier.

Thanks

1. Is the mixing and application process as difficult as it sounds?
I don't think it's difficult, I think it's fun! I love experimenting and adding different oils conditioners and stuff, maybe that's just me. The great thing is, you get to discover what mix works best for your hair.

2. Is it harder for naturals to use it?
I have relaxed hair, but I think it's probably the same for relaxed and naturals...it would make both of them stronger. I imagine the color would deposit even more brilliantly on natural hair.

3. How long does it take to see results?
I saw results (strenght, some shine) after the first application.

4. How often do you have to apply it?
You can do it once a week, once a month, once a year...it's up to you! I do a henna/indigo treatment every two or three weeks...that's all my hair really needs.

5. what’s the best brand
I order my henna and indigo off the internet...but others use henna from the indian store. I'd say use BAQ henna, that's what I feel safest with, I know nothing is added to it that would mess up my hair.

HTH! And Happy New Year!

1. Is the mixing and application process as difficult as it sounds?
Just designate a plastic bowl & wooden spoon for "henna use only", get you a pack of those yellow dish washing gloves from the dollar store (no need to be expensive)this ensures no henna gets on your hands, nails, etc. Then keep it basic: Add 1 1/2 to 3 oz. henna depending on your length, 4-5 Tbsp. oil ( I love coconut & olive oil), then your warm water. Just enough till it looks like pancake batter. Wait for dye release if you want color OR put on hair right away for 30-45 minutes for great conditioning
2. Is it harder for naturals to use it?
NOPE! I wouldn't think so. The key either way is to apply it well to the scalp and work it through from root to tip. Imagine a making a mud hut on your head.
3. How long does it take to see results?
You should notice the strength and perhaphs texture with your first application, some people even get some of that henna bling the first time too.
4. How often do you have to apply it?
I'm a fine-hair (OK WAS:D ) I apply 1-2 per week. You will have to find the balance in the amount of strengthening your hair needs. If you're gonna use it as your protein treatment, I'd suggest 1x per week or atleast bimonthly.
5. what’s the best brand
I had my mom send me a herbal henna blend called Karishma because it has some other great herbs that compliment henna's conditioning benefits ( amla, shikakai, reetha, bhringraj)

Just have fun with it! Experiment with your mixes! Find out what YOUR hair likes best. I'm sure you'll love the results.

thanks. Whats up with adding the tea/coffe I know its suppose to help "release" the color but how long do you let the mix sit i've read overnight or not at all

happy new year to all

See, you don't really need all that...just add water, that's all that's needed to make it work.
You can use the henna as soon as you mix it, or let it sit as long as 48 hours to release maximum color...either way, your hair will get the conditioning, strengh and shine you're looking for.

Take a look at this webpage, it answered all the questions I had when I first started out! :D
