Ok I did and Aphogee treatment got my ends trimmed. My hair was in good shape despite the fact the middle fell clean out the week before. But oh me I had to go and sew in a weave anyway thinking this would give me growth. I took it after 2-weeks guess what clumps and clumps of hair like you wouldn't believe. I give up I am going to be a wet setting mama for the rest of this year! No more weave, no more braids, no more. They don't work for me if they did my hair would be down to my ankles I spent about 5 years in weaves and braids.

I know what you mean! I can't wear weaves either. years ago I had one and when I finally took it out only the sides of my hair towards the back had grown. The rest were broken pieces, and thin. I had to get my hair cut to a chin length bob.

wow I keep hearing about this and I'm amazed. Braids work well to help protect. I wonder what it is that make some ladies hair break off. Have you ever tried a neat cornrow style without the extensions? or maybe a phony pony for protection?

I did the same thing a couple of months ago. I got a sewn in trying to maintain length and I guess I didnt detangle enough and when I washed my hair it was like a net 
, so much hair was ripped out I was on the brink of tears. from now on I'm not doing anything extra, I'm sticking with my bun !

Plus I look thugged out, my husband will smack me if I even attempt to rock a phony pony I went through this stage for a whole year those were some tore up looking times. A ponytail does nothing for my facial features or wardrobe. But make no mistake some of you look good with those ponies just not me.
maybe its the cotton thread? cotton will tear your hair, especially if you hear that little zzzzzzzip, when the thread is going through your hair. maybe you didnt moisturize enough? i know a lot of people like to put their hair in braids/weaves and do nothing to it, not even wash it.
also, are you saying you wore braids/weaves for 5 years straight? i got tired of braids, so i just started finding believable phony ponies and wearing twist outs.

I used nylon, coated upholestry thread recommended by someone who does professional weaves. I kept them greased, oiled, moisturized, I washed every 4 days. I wore weaves and braids of everysort off and on for about 5 years I rarely wore my real hair. I am going to resort to relaxing on time a roller sets and flexi-rods, and flat ironing around touch-up time.honeydrop215 said:

Just adding a few tracks would always break of the hair that was around the tracks. So adding pieces in for "fullness" always ended up leaving me worse off than when I started. Also relaxing the hair while I was on a "weaving program" was bad too. The hair is stronger when it's natural and better for braiding.

yea i agree...Im sorry to hear about all of this...I wear weaves all the time and they have really helped as a protective style....but before when i wasnt taking care of my hair never moisturized or anything it wasnt helping...but after i learned how to take care of my hair its been doing 100% better especially with the weaves...MizAvalon said:

im all shook up now...i put a weave in my hair about 2 weeks ago to retain some length and use as a protective style....now im worried its going to do more damage then good

You say you keep it moisturized and wash it all the time.
I know a lot of ladies will disagree w/ me so take this advice w/ a grain of salt.
I never wash my hair when I have it in braids. I don't even add any products. When I used to wash and put in products, it was BREAK City... But now that I'm just letting my hair do its thing, it's just been nothing but grow, grow, grow.
Maybe you should do less to it while it's in weave and braids.
Just my advice though...

Sorry to hear about your mishap with braids and weaves. I would like to share my experience as I hope it will provide a tidbit of help.
The first time I got braids was in the mid-90's. My hair always been thick, yet, never long. It was damaged so badly I had my niece cut off 4" of severely damaged, relaxed hair. This left me with approx. 3". She braided my hair in individual braids. My goals (which I stuck to. to the letter at that time) was to moisturize daily with African Pride Braid Spray & every other day, apply Mane n' Tail Conditioner to my scalp to massage it in. I also took vitamins: a multi., Ultra Hair Timed-Release Supplements, vit. b-complex. vit.c, inositol/choline supplement, liquid silica, vit.e, l-cyestiene & B-5, lecthin, omega-3 caps. I was very faithful in my vit. regime; taking everything 2/x daily except the multi, vit. e, and the omega-3. Since I was on a diet, I ate mega veggies, fruits, a lot fish and exercised twice a day;
1st thing in the morning & in the evening.
Three months later, I took my hair down for re-braiding. Putting all the gook in my hair yielded a product build up you wouldn't believe! Patiently I worked that gunk out. I lost a lot of hair but my niece, my daughters & I couldn't believe how fast my hair had grown! It had to have grown an 1" a month for those 3/months! She re-braided my hair and I repeated my regime. At the end of the next 3/months, my hair grew 3" again. My hair (all even for once) was touching the top of my shoulders. I never got an
1" a month ever in my entire life. Plus, working out, increased my cirulation which attributed to my growth, not to mention I reached my weight goal.
I lost a "handful" of hair each time, due mostly to natural shedding. I received compliments enmass. I was even accused of wearing a weave because as one woman put it: "She never had that much hair in her life!"
This happened prior to owning a PC and ignorant of proper hair care for my 4/b hair. Soon, I reverted to relaxing and applying heat everytime I thought about it; trying to maintain the straightest hair possible. Eventually, my hair broke off, and thinned out. If I had the knowledge such as the info. on this hair board, think of the great condition my hair would be in today.
Today, the only thing I do is sporadically take my vit. supplements, currently I don't exercise (shame, shame on me) but I do moisturize (with Surge) 2/x a day. I no longer use heat unless it's for special ocassions. I wear my hair in a single braid tucked under. I think the most significant factor aiding in my growth today has to be the Surge -- consistent moisturizing.
I had my hair weaved twice last year. I used the same moisturizing regime -- twice a day (I still lost a lot of hair upon removing the weaves). But I also achieved growth. It appears to be almost an inch ea. time. I kept the weave in for 1/mo. both times.

Wow I am surprised to hear this b/c since I started wearing weaves my hair is growing more than ever before and much healthier. I would be interested to know why u got these results. Do u think the braids were too tight or small? Or maybe the braids werent re-inforced so ur hair got tangled underneathe?

Then I did them to see if it was my mom, we used kanekalon hair both times. I might try the individual braids again at the end of February I am transitioning. My cousin will do them, no new braiders in my hair. I am not going to get anymore weaves until I am 100% natural.
Me too.. and obviously I still haven’t learned my lesson b/c I am thinking about getting a curly sewn-in soon. Each time I have had braids or a weave my hair has broken off HORRIBLY!

They have those weaves where you just sewn in the perimeter to your braids.. Its called stitch and go. Maybe I should try that! That way we don’t have to worry about thread breaking our hair, and we could do loose cornrows underneath Maybe you can do that, the next time you want a weave.

I say sort off because I do my massages every now and then, and when I do I use an oil concoction on my scalp and sleep in a plastic cap so my hair does get some of that. But I wash my hair often (at least 3 times a week). In fact, I'm sorta back to Brenda's regimen coz it worked for me in the past: meaning I get most of my moisture from washing my hair (whether with shampoo or conditioner) or spritzing it with an essential oil/ACV/water/glycerin concoction. It helps that I do my own braids so I can touch up any messy ones at a moment's notice. Plus braidouts always help cover up any braids that might be in need of a touch-up, until I can find the time to work on them.
I'm sorry Cece this happened to you. I guess different things work for different pple. I can see how not using extensions even for cornrows can be kinder to your hair, but I also find using additional hair helps me undo my hair with my fingers more easily. I never suffer from gunk or tangles when I undo my hair, and I believe lack of product build-up at the base of my hair/braids is to thank for that. And I attribute that to not using too many products, rinsing thoroughly after conditioning, and doing my final rinse with an ACV solution (and that's somewhat thorough too coz I dunk my head in the solution and keep it there while I massage my scalp.)
I wish you the best in finding something that works for you, and I'm sure someone here will have the answer.
