What about EDAMAME? Is it healthy and safe and possibly good for hair growth to snack on edamame for the protein?

Can one ever eat too much soy in their diet? I'm thinking of using edamame as a daily snack for protein content to help hair growth. What are your thoughts?
 
My mother-in-law introduced me to Edamame...I love them, I know they are a soy product but not sure on the specifics. Now, I'm adding them to tonights grocery list!
 
I eat edamame pretty regularly (1-2X) a week. I do like to sprinkle sea salt on it however so I don't consume it more regularly because too much salt is terrible for one's health.

I buy mine from Trader Joes. They have the ones that are already cooked, (you just heat and serve), the ones you have to cook (I buy these, 'cause I don't use salt - they only take 5 minutes) or you can buy the ones that are already shelled. I LOVE THEM!
 
Thanks ladies! I have only had them in salad at restaurants so I am a novice. But what I understand is that they are the little beans from soybean pods right?

I didn't know they were sold uncooked but it sounds like cooking them isn't a big undertaking right? What do you do? Boil them for five minutes? I hope I can find them already cooked.

The ones from Trader Joe's come frozen. The uncooked ones you just pour some water in a pot, bring water to a boil, toss in the Edamame, boil for 5 minutes, drain and eat! You can eat them hot or cold.

Those are the same ones I also buy.
 
Call me the slow one,but what is it exaclty? I too am looking for ways to add more protein.

I buy them fresh from my neighborhood market. I will eat them in salad, or put them in a MW safe container with a little chicken broth and cook them on the "fresh veggie" setting.
 
I love Edamame!! I eat them at least 2x a week. :lick:

For years, I used to just slurp them from the end, without opening the whole pod, but one day, I don't know why, but I opened the pods before aspiring the peas, and in one of them, I saw a lil dead worm. :look: Since then, I ALWAYS open the pod before eating. DH laughs at me, he claims the worms have proteins so he doesn't mind ... :lol:

I love edamame beans!! I usually eat them by themselves or in my salad--great protein source. :yep: These are much healthier than processed soybeans also.

Jessie, :shocked: I don't always open those pods up but you know I will from now on! :lol:

Edamame is the Japanese word for soybeans and they grow in a pod. They are green, taste kind of nutty and are bigger than regular soybeans. Edamame are very high in protein, great for vegetarians or anyone who wants to boost their protein source. :)

It shouldn't turn you off too much. Bugs and Worms like to hide out in veggies. I called myself eating some raw organic broccolli as a snack one day. I rinsed it thoroughly with lemon juice when I purchased it and I rinsed it again before eating. Anyway I am snacking away and I was on my last brocolli floret when I examined it and saw that it was filled with tiny bugs at least 12 of them:eek:

At first I was grossed out then I just shrugged it off, it probably wasn't the first time that I had eaten a bug and it probably wouldn't be the last:perplexed

Oh ok, thank you. I am going to have to stop by one of our health food stores and pick some up, they sound yummy.
 
Edamame rock! I love them! I also buy the frozen ones at my grocery store, and heat them in the microwave. They're very good topped with a little Bragg Liquid Aminos. :lick:

Darn, I was just at the store Sunday and I forgot to get some. I'll have to go back and pick up a bag.

Yes, I'm aware of it. I'm just not interested though-there are other sources in which I can get adequate protein. I only heard about this on the FoodNetwork a few years ago and my curiosity was peaked in this thread until I read about the worm...you have to understand the women in my family have an intense phobia when it comes to worms. I will never forget the time I had this rice product (cheap Wal-Mart brand-never again :look:) and there was a "maggot" in it. :barf: Needless, to say I never bought that brand ever again (I didn't buy it the first time but someone else did :ohwell:)--I mean I've never seen anything in Rice-A-Roni but I *always* check *extra* thoroughly now-and make sure to rinse well (of course that is a must)...I mean if I didn't check thoroughly before I would have been seriously ill (I'm sure I would have noticed the taste of it) :barf:.

Relax, the worm was dead. Dead worms can't harm you. And yes veggie worms are part of life.

Just steam your edamame pods for at least 5 minutes before eating them, or buy the already shelled Edamame frozen bags from Trader Joe's. They don't have any worms.

Edamame is worth it.

:lol: Yeah, I'm relaxed...I just have a fear of worms-dead or alive. :look: I wish there was a Trader Joe store here but there isn't. :ohwell:
