Is this true???....

This is a response I read off another hair board. They were actually responding to whether or not WGO works. What do you think about this answer??

good rule to follow is this.......anything that you put on your hair, or your face, that is an oil or protein, is just not going to work. Remember, that your hair and skin, are dead cells, and that will not change, and just rubbing oils and proteins on it, will never work....except to give you oily hair.

there are a couple of oils that have been scientifically proven to penetrate the hair shaft and condition hair and skin and one of those oils is coconut oil

*snort*

Yeah, and four years of school trumps millions of dollars of research and a couple of phD's? I think not.

Someone needs to catch up on recent research on the effects of lipids and protiens and how they can bind to the hair shaft and/or penetrate the hair shaft itself.

Most oils can't penetrate your hair because the molecules are too big to get into the pores in the hair, but there are a few (coconut and jojoba come to mind) that have been scientifically proven to be able to penetrate the hair shaft :yep:

And I think we all know that protein DOES work at making your hair stronger. There have been studies on it, and I forgot HOW it works, but it does. Slap some Aphogee on your head and tell me it's pointless and doesn't change you hair

If oils and and proteins are pointless because hair is dead, then why use moisturizers or conditioners? Why do anything to it, since it's dead anyway?

maybe by "works" she means WGO doesn't make your hair grow faster? cuz my hair's growth rate has not changed from using WGO. but i don't use it for that purpose. i use it to help lock moisture into my hair, and sometimes to help weigh my hair down after straightening.

please come back and clarify, OP... :look:

Maybe this person just wanted people to know how "educated" he/she was. I do know this, and it's a scientific fact. 60% of what you put on your skin gets absorbed, so be careful what you put on it. With hair, I'm sure there's no big difference in the percentage. If oils didn't penetrate, how in the world does our bodies secrete them? Sheesh...(or maybe that too was an ignorant statement, but I'm not claiming to have a degree in dermatology...)

I saw this tip on http://hair.lifetips.com/tip/99308/hair/hair-tips/hair-dead-or-alive.html and I think the last statement is well said :)

Hair: Dead or Alive?

Even healthy hair is dead. It may be thick and lustrous, but it contains no living tissue. Tiny cup-shaped pits found all over the scalp, called hair follicles, produce hair.

The hair you struggle to maintain is made of dead cells that have been turned into cylinders of keratin. These cylinders form the hair shaft, which grows at about 1cm per month.

Even though it's dead, hair contains fats, pigment (melanin), water (at least 10 per cent of dry hair) and traces of vitamins and minerals. Good hair care is necessary for keeping the dead alive.

It annoys me that some can't get this simple concept.

Just because something isn't a live doesn't mean that it can't be taken care of and described as "healthy"

We take care of inanimate objects all the time. We wax and buff our cars and floors, polish our furniture and silverware... DUH, hair and skin can be taken care of and maintained so that it stays in good condition.

Not directed at anyone in particular, just a mini rant. :)

Skin is not dead! It's the biggest organ the body has.

plus I'm half way down with an accelerated nursing program that will result in another bachelors. :look: Just had to add that in there. :lachen:

the very top layer is dead though right? or is it just the skin cells that we sluff off that are dead? (i honestly don't remember... :look:)
