I recently bought one of those round donut-shaped things to stuff my bun with.

It is made of a grey foam material and I want to know if you guys think that it would do any damage to my hair if I spray painted it black so that even if I don't fully cover it with my own hair, it won't be noticable.

I don't like those foam donuts because they are the same material as sponge rollers and can break your hair.

Another way to make a bun, is the method Lorraine uses. Look in her album. She makes a ponytail, and then takes section of hair and curls it up and then pins into place all over. It makes a cute full looking bun.

I was using one of these and I noticed when i took it out of my hair each night it was pulling strands of my hair out with it. Just like regular foam rollers arent good for your hair I dont think these are either.

I agree with the other ladies, I dont think they're good for your hair. If you want to use a filler, you could always cut off the end of a sock and roll it up into the shape of a donut then cover it with anything-but-cotton stockings to get the same effect.

My mom uses one and she cut up an old black slip and covered it with that. I think she had to make a stitch or two to make it stay but works for her. I think someone else on this board did the same thing. I think maybe Shantani. PM her, she may have a suggestion to help cover it so it won't pull your hair.

I tried that before and it just didn't work for me. I think that I may try to use black silk or satin fabric instead.

I use two old socks; a gym sock and a black trouser sock. This is what I'm using in my avatar.

I'm planning on getting some satin material to cover it with though.

When I had one of those I did sewed on black satin so it wouldn't snag my hair.
This is exactly what I would've done if I had the time to actually sit down to sew something! I bought the donut and the french roll one ages ago and it's still in the pack. I don't really think I need them anyway so I'm going to give them to my younger sister and let her sew the satin on them. I'm sure she'd be happy to have them. :)

I used the foam donut and noticed that there were always strands of my hair in the foam at the end of the day. I went to the fabric store and found some black/brown satin remnants (they were much cheaper than paying for a yard) to cover the donut. It works like a charm!

Did you sew the remnants onto the donut yourself? If so, how did you do it and do you have a pic of the finished product?

I just started using the same kind of donut. I need something firm to smooth my hair around becaue it's so curly when it's wet. I've noticed some hair in it too when I take it off but I don't feel it pulling out hair so I attributed it to catching shed hairs. But I too am going to do the satin cover thing just for added protection.

On an off-topic note - ThePrincess725 I just love your hair! You wear a lot of the same kind of styles that I do except yours look a lot neater! It looks like our hair is about the same length too! Great hair album you have.

kitty19: yes, i have a pic of the donut but i don't know how to add a pic in the reply thread. if you know how, let me know and i can put it on this thread. otherwise, i can upload it into my album. just let me know. i have pics of the foam one where i just cut out the satin material, wrapped it around, and sewed it. i also have a pic of a bigger donut that i made out of the sock method where i also wrapped it with satin.

jetcitygirl: thank you so much! what a compliment coming from you! i wear some of the same styles that you do bc i COPY off of you. You are one of my hair idols. I have your album saved to my favorites. your hair is ABSOLUTELY beautiful!

I was thinking about using the two sock method but adding fake hair like DSD has in her album because I don' t have enough hair to cover the "donut". Do your think that would work?

You can try the method I use with the scrunchie made from fake hair. It has worked for others on the board.
