For the last two years I have been doing wash n go's during the warm months, and then getting my hair rollerset and getting the roots blowed out. I would like to know if my hair would be ok if I could let it air dry and get it flat ironed every week? Its been about two years since I have had a relaxer and I dont plan on getting one.

I have no clue what type of hair I have. I am confused by thsi 4a 2b stuff. So, maybe someone could tell me. My hair is very curly but also fine.

You seem to have 3c hair absolutely lovely by the way, thick lush and long and I  the color!

Anywhoo.....I'm about 2 inches shy of BSL but I was a straightened natural for like 4 years straight before this year when I started alternating more often. I could get away with that because I had strands that could take it.

Do you have thick/coarse strands or do you have fine fragile strands? Thick coarse strands tend to be able to handle heat better then fine....also your technique right now sounds great, a rollerset and blow out to the roots seems like it would definitely get your curls straight....are you not satisfied with the results with this technique?

I think flat ironing could be okay for you especially since you'll be air-drying before you flat iron eliminating extra steps that expose the hair to heat. I'm not totally sure you should do it weekly though, maybe 2 times a month if you really wanted to be on the safe side but if you want to be a straightened natural then go for it every week.

Just be aware that flat ironing over long periods of time will lead to texture changes and curl pattern loosening.

maybe it's possible... kathy howse does it... but i would suggest 2 things if you do choose to flat iron 1x a week
1 dc w/every wash
2 monitor the health of your hair very closely

Could you explain how this (bold text) is possible? Love your posts, BTW.

Thanks aracelli, what I meant by that is with back to back heat usage you can start to have an inconsistent texture or your curls will become looser towards the ends like mine did.

i used to flat iron and blow dry once a week for over a year. At the time I was relaxed though... My hair hair still looked healthy and thick. You can check out my fotki. My 2005-2006 album is when I'd flat iron every week. The only thing is that I didn't retain a lot of length over one year.

OK thanks Isawstars retaining length in my goal, is if flat ironing every week is going to hinder that.. NO THANK YOU! I guess I'll just stick to a few times a year and rollerset the rest of the time!

I do. Every week religiously I go to the salon to get "pressed" (not in that traditional sense of stove and hot comb, but rollerset, blow dryed and electric ceramic / tourmaline flatironed.

I use kerastase products, and I haven't noticed any adverse effects. I dc every week, and my stylist uses a heat protecting leave-in.

I was natural, but put a relaxer in for about 5 mins to help reduce frizz, as I live in a humid island.

Oh yeah, and I haven't lost any length. If anything, I have gained more. I find my hair retains moisture when worn straight, as if I wear it curly too many days in a row, it starts to dry out.

My stylist says it's because when straightened, your cuticles are closed, sealing in moisture, as opposed to when it's curly.

I also don't flat iron in between visits. If it starts to frizz, oh well. But I find once a week hasn't been a problem, at all. I guess it's a combination of excellent products, great tools, and a gentle technique.

This is EXACTLY what I do. I NEVER wash without deep conditioning, EVER!
