Is $95 a good price to relax virgin hair or is that too much?

I'm in the NOLA area.....that's the price on Bittersweet's website ..... is there another reputable salon that may be cheaper?

I could go the John Jay Beauty School or the Aveda Institute but I don't really wants students relaxing my natural hair.

Just curious as to why you want to relax? I didn't get that choice in my life so i was just wondering.

However, i'd be scared as hell to trust someone with my virgin hair especially after being a member on this board.

$95 seems high as a kite to me but i've learned prices is relative to where you live and the going rate in that area so I don't know.

What precautions are you gonna take for someone to relax your virgin hair? Are you going to talk to them and see if they've done it before? Get a consult first or something?

I was relaxed before for 14+ yrs.... i stopped in 06 and decided to go natural because of things I read about relaxer and how it can damage the scalp. I also wanted to get reacquainted with my natural hair.

I'm looking for salons with websites....so I can see what they offer...but they all expensive.

I'onno, Val. $95 sounds expensive. You may have to just check your yellow pages and ask if they have free consultations. I wish I could help.

I checked the yellow pages but I'm one of those people who won't call a place that doesn't have a big ad in there, listing all their services.

Myabe you should see if a relaxed member of the forum could do it for you that lives near by?? I would trust any of these ladies to do my hair than someone i dont know and am unsure about their healthy hair practices...

That is about right to relax virgin hair. It's not a touch up. It's the whole thing.

I agree. Back in the mid-90s, when my hair was first relaxed (I was 12 I believe), it was about 80 bucks or so. So with inflation, I believe the price for virgin hair would rise. Honestly though, if the salon is reputable and you know folks who go there, I would suck it up and pay $95. Not everyone who relaxes can do 'virgin' hair. Perhaps go there for the first time and then go elsewhere for touchups.

Hey Val! I'm in NOLA as well. Back when I was a student at UNO I got a perm and cut from a white student at the John Jay School near Lakefront that was NIIIICE! There are instructors going around so the student isn't completely alone. Also, the students are very receptive to what you want, will ask plenty of questions, and eager to please. There were other black shops in the area but not sure what is back post K.

I am a self relaxer now but my ultimate suggestion would be to go to a shop and just sit and see what condition the repeat customers' hair is in and how customer relations are (such as: do they ask customer plently of questions.)

I went to the John Jay school in Kenner about 2 weeks ago but it was just for flat ironing.A black girl did my hair and she was fine. I like the look of Bittersweet though. If it was just for a touch up....hell I can do that myself since I did it for yrs and I used to relax people's hair in my aunt's salon in Dominica.

I'm just trying to be cautious, I don't want damage to my hair and I don't want my hair bone straight right now.

Val... I don't know about a virgin relaxer on longer hair, but the woman who does my mom's hair charged me $75 to do my hair when I was still at TWA stage. I do my own relaxers now.

That is too expensive in my area but again, prices are relative to where you live.

ok my b/f decided that I'm going to bittersweet so they can "hook a sister up"
he said "quit b!tching about the price and go, I'll pay for it"

The owner of Bittersweet is a member at my church, New Home Baptist church. Her hair is always beautiful and she has mentioned to members that she has a salon. I am natural and have never considered her straightening or any bodyelse doing my hair but me. Saying all that to say that her hair and other church members hair that she does is always beautiful. One of the girls is on her website.
