Is My Hair Getting Coarser?

I just pulled a strand from head and to my utter shock it appears coarse-- at least two times the width of my usual fine strands. Can it be that, with appropriate moisture and protein my strands are actually becoming more heavy duty? Or is it more likely that I actually have a mix of both coarse and fine strands on my head?

I have bunch of random extremely coarse hairs sprinkled around. My friend has this too. I think it's normal.
