I have heard great reviews of the maxiglied here, and I came across an infomercial Friday. I am so tempted to buy one, but isn't it just as damaging as a flat iron because it uses heat? I am pretty new to this hair health thing, and I have learned what heat can do to your hair. Before I go out and buy one I just wanted to get some facts on how it would effect my progress.

I believe any source of direct heat can be damaging. I have only used my Maxiglide twice and both times I had no noticeable damage. Use a good heat protectant and the lowest setting you can

^^ I agree, I'm contemplating purchasing either a SEDU or Maxiglide, but I rarely use any heat -and since I'm transitioning I really going to keep heat to a bare minimum. I plan to use it to check my progress occasionally, but I'm leery....any heat can and will damage your hair.

I love my maxiglide...I really do....but even when I put it on the lowest setting it seems like it is still getting to hot for my hair...I'm currently looking for a replacement.:) I rarely use heat also..I just want a flatiron to have on hand.:)

Yeah, I agree, any type of heat is damaging.

OT: Cincy, your hair is GORGEOUS!!! *puts Cincy on hair inspiration list*

ugh, how can i say this.......

due to the alopecia i've been chem feel (will never eva go back to it) so i've been sporting braid-outs, braids, twists and twist out for months and months.

when i maxglided my hair my husband of 18 years says to me: "you know lyn, i'm so glad to see you with straight hair again - i didn't want to tell you but i didn't really like that braided look but i know you had to do what you had to do at the time".

omg! nearly fell off my chair because not once did he ever EVER say anything negative to me during the previous months. i love him for that since i know i'd have a hard time holding my tongue if he was looking a certain way and i didn't like it.

i really hate to think that he now expects me to constantly flatiron my hair but, i'm thinking if there's a way to flat iron every 2 weeks or so (maybe every 3 week) and use pincurls, rollers or a modified braidout to maintain that look i might go back to it. wintertime's coming so i may be able to get away with it.

i always use the maxiglide on the first setting only (don't know how some folks can go above 2 or 3 really), use biosilk or some other cone to protect and do not blow dry before ironing - it gets nice and straight but does not kill the wave pattern after doing it.

of course the deep conditioning and moisture regimens will not change.

i dunno - do NOT want to get back into the cycle of flat iron/curling iron every day or every other day nonsense, and won't but, i also want to have him enjoy my hair as much as i do.

back to your ?

i really think in extreme moderation and lots of TLC hair can take a light flatironing. i wouldn't combine it with blowdrying or hot curl ironing but explore the rollers, braidouts (for waves) and pincurls to keep the damage to minimal.

Watch and listen to your hair - first sign of hair damage - stop and do something else ;)

ETA: Please DO use the steam burst....this really helps soften your hair and adds moisture and shine. that's one of the best features of the maxi!!

I agree with Cincybrownsugar- direct heat can be damaging. I contemplated purchasing a maxiglide but opted for a sedu b/c I didn't understand how it worked.
O/T: Cincybrownsugar- your hair looks beautiful!

it messed my hair up something terrible last time I used it, but every1's hair reacts differently to 1 product so I dunno...what works for 1 might not work for another

Have you tried rollersetting your hair and then wrapping it? Or just flat ironing the roots, after a rollerset?

Thanks for the comps on my hair Ebonygurl00 and determined_to_grow. Sorry to hijack OP

It's direct heat so it has to be, but IMO it's less damaging than the other flatirons because of the steam shot.

It can be damaging with over/improper use or if used on hair that is too damp (the latter happened to me). A heat protectant is absolutely critical, IMO. Also, the best thing for me is the use of the steam. Without the steam, my ends dried a bit.

Heat used to be my enemy, but I had to learn what my hair could tolerate.

I used my Maxiglide once a week for 3 weeks. I only keep my hair straight (wrapping or pulled back into a ponytail) for three days, then I do a baggie with oil and a conditioner, preferably a "hair mayonnaise" or Humectress on my ends for moisture under a phony pony. I give my hair a 1 -2 week rest from straightening after the third week. Then start again. Each month I dust my ends after straightening.

This routine seems to be working for me. I went from APL in the back, to brushing BSL. The front grows a bit slower, but I'm well below collar bone and approaching APL. I don't have a camera anymore, so I only have a few pics in the gallery of my Maxiglide hair.

My hair is too short for the maxiglide, but I have to give u ladies a shout out. Whimsy, your hair is gorgeous! You and Cincy got some serious skills. I have so much to learn!

yw ;)

i've honestly never even attempted a wrap before :S -it looks totally too complicated for my not-so-swift brain to figure out.

i do have some of those magnetic rollers (but don't own a bonnet dryer - hehe) and before that some flexi rods and before that some plain foam rollers....couldn't bear the thought of sleeping in any of them and the foam you gotta use the end papers and they kept popping loose - so that was out.

today i went and found some soft foam ones that are wrapped in cloth - scuncii makes them. they look comfy for sleeping in and i'm pretty sure i can break them in pretty good with a little bit of oil applied to the cloth.

gonna give it a try perhaps tonight and see what happens.

if all else fails i might have to look into getting a bonnet hair dryer and try a real roller set.

I agree with this statement. Same here.

I tried to flat iron my hair with a maxiglide after letting it airdry while I was like 7 weeks post :cry3: . I used a heat protectant, a little oil and ran a fine tooth comb through each section before trying to put the maxiglide through it and the maxiglide still was pulling my hair "OUT".... My hair is way TOO course and kinky to use the maxiglide...and I'm relaxed.....the pins in it are very damaging to my hair. I haven't seen that much hair loss in ages, therefore, I think I will get the CHI flatiron.....I'm leaving the maxiglide alone... Plus I'm going to start texlaxing with Phyto_index 1 for optimal health of my hair and for stronger strands.

That happened to me whnever I tried to airdry. Thats why I never airdry anymore. My hair tends to be much harder and coarser whenevr I airdry.
I LOVE my maxiglide..love it!!!!

you should definitely use the steamburst. if you run a puff of steam over your hair first, that gets it pretty straight and so you don't have to use as much heat. it's the best feature of the maxiglide. i think its the feature that helps lower the amount of heat damage
