Is liquid styling gel the same as a serum?

Can they be used as heat protectants also?

No I believe they're different. Gel is to hold hair in place, serum (depending on the kind) is used for shine, to define curls, and smooth hair down w/o the gel feeling. So depeding on the brands you have, maybe, but I'd say no. And some serums can be heat protectants, but I doubt many gels are.
