Is it the Elasta or the Lye- why my roots didn't get straight?

I recently decided to switch to lye after reading up on it on the board. I did my first self relax in November using Elasta mild lye. For some reason at the BSS, I got confused and picked up mild instead of regular. Anywho, I don't know if it was b/c this was my first time self relaxing, or the fact that it was mild but my roots didn't get straight. So, I tried again with Elasta regular, but this time had a professional do it and while the front got 85% straight, the back got only about 70% straight and when I rinsed it out, my hair was like wavy/curly instead of "straight straight" like it usually is. So I am wondering if it is the Elasta or the fact that maybe lye doesn't get hair as straight as no lye.? can anyone shed some light?
