Is it ok to use an OIL as a pre-poo?

I ask this because I've read about some people doing this. But I thought that oils should always be used at the end of the shampoo/conditioning process because oils seal in moisture.

So I was thinking, if you use it in the very beginning as a pre-poo, BEFORE washing the hair, wouldn't it work against your hair by sealing OUT moisture??

Not really. The oils in your prepoo will act as a barrier, preventing the shampoo from stripping too much moisture out of your hair. I've done an oil prepoo (amla & castor oil) on occasion, and it left me with very soft, moisturized hair. Indian women saturate their hair in oils before shampooing, and they typically have beautiful hair, so it must be a good idea!

So how long do you guys leave the oil on before shampooing? And do you rinse it out first, then shampoo?

No real set time to it for me. I don't do this often because I don't usually have time, but I leave it on for about 20 minutes. Other ladies leave the oil on overnight. Then I rinse it out for a bit before shampooing.

You're thinking about this way too hard, girl, just go ahead and take the plunge!:)

I just got Sole & Cinnamon oil and the directions on the bottle say:

Apply to dirty hair and let sit for 5 minutes then rinse and shampoo. I was surprised to read that because the site didn't explain it was considered a treatment oil but that's what it is.

I think it's beneficial for oils to be applied at both times, before and after wash.

Yea, I guess you're right

Oils can definitely be used as a prepoo. That's what Indian women grow up doing. They'll usually put in coconut oil over night and then use a mixture of reetha/shikakai herbal tea to wash it out the next morning.

I use a mixture of EVOO, castor oil and Lisa's Hair Elixir (Carols Daughter's essential oils mixture) and let it sit on my hair for about 20-30 minutes before I shampoo. Sometimes I heat it up for a hot oil treatment. But does anybody know the actual benefit of a hot oil treatment?

I mix EVOO, regular conditioner, and a protein together to get really soft hair. I think the oil plus protein is a really great combo. I was hesitant because I thought the shampoo would strip my hair but my ends are really soft.

I do a castor oil prepoo and add jojoba oil to my DC after my wash. there's no harm in doin it before. you should try both ways and see what works for you :)

I think Using oil before you shampoo helps a lot because it prevents poo from stipping your hair's oil. I use oil before every shampoo.
