Is it a sin for a married couple to choose to never have children?

My father says that if a married couple is able to have children but choose to never have children they are committing a sin because God commanded married people to be fruitful, multiply, and replenish the earth. Is this really true? Was God referring to all married people or specifically to Adam and Eve?

Forgive me if this topic has been discussed already. I really need insight into this issue from a Christian perspective.
