Is anyone making their own bonnets?

I just thought about this and couldn't find anything on the board or yt. Does anyone do this? if so how? Does anyone know of a tutorial? I want to make a silk one. Where do I buy the products. TIA

Hope this isn't too stupid of a question.

Good question...and I have thought making one, myself, but haven't done it yet.

I don't know of any yt or tutorials. However, if I were going to make a bonnet, I would just rip out the elastic in an old one, iron the fabric so it lays flat, then use it as a pattern. Then I would make a casing for the elastic (1/4" wide) by sewing 1/2" bias tape along the outer, inside edge.

Most fabric stores carry 100% silk (Hancock's or JoAnn's) bias tape and elastic. I bought silk from JoAnn's and made a scarf, but I still use a store-bought satin bonnet.

Hope this helps.

I bought some silk from Joanne's Fabrics. I just use it as a scarf though. I would think Joanne's would have everything you'd need: elastic, etc.

Yes that does help. I will look into Joann's. I just don't know how I would be able to make the bonnet round and scrunch that it fits around my head snuggly. I want to make one for DD too.

I know it would be so easy just to use a scarf but I am natural and I think a bonnet is much better for keeping my styles especially since my hair shrinks up so bad I don't braid it up at night.
